Shuai Zhang v Katie Volynets Head to Head

Zhang and Volynets have never faced off in a competitive match before this.

Volynets Stuns Kudermetova

Veronika Kudermetova was one of the pre-tournament favourites and coming up against the qualifier Volynets, she was 1/12 to win the encounter. Most thought it was a done deal but Volynets had other ideas.

Having featured in only five Grand Slam tournaments before this – and won just one match – Volynets didn’t care too much about her ranking of 113th in the world, to storm into the third round.

She won 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 to become the first American qualifier to reach this far in this tournament in 30 years. Volynets had earlier sent Kristina Mladenovic packing from the qualifiers and then defeated Evgeniya Rodina in her opener.

Having never reached this far in Grand Slam in her career, Volynets will now set her goals higher as she faces another fighting opponent in the third round.

Zhang Pummels Petra in Round Two

It was expected to be a tough battle for the world number 22 Zhang bur she brought out her A-game and pummelled the 37th-ranked Petra Martic to reach the third round.

In a match lasting an hour and 14 minutes, Zhang faced just one break-point and saved it while breaking her opponent on three occasions. What made the 6-3, 6-3 win special was the Chinese player braved 25 winners and eight aces from Martic and was always in control of the encounter.

Zhang hadn’t had the best of times coming into the Australian Open this year, with back to back losses in the two Adelaide tournaments without a win. Even her opening round victory over Patricia Tig wasn’t quite convincing.

Now that she has shown how clinical she can get though, Zhang will have her confidence soaring again coming into this third round encounter against a player ranked outside the top 100.

Can she make the fourth round here for the second time in her career?

Zhang v Volynets Prediction and Tip

Zhang might not have been the favourite in the previous round but here she will be gunning for a straight-set win. Volynets shouldn’t trouble her too much.
