Ben Shelton v Alexei Popyrin Head to Head

Shelton and Popyrin have never played each other before this.

Shelton Doubles His Grand Slam Wins

Before coming into this year’s Australian Open, Shelton had never won a main draw match at a major. Now he has two.

After edging out Zhizhen Zhang in a fifth set tie-breaker in the first round, Shelton did not break into the proverbial sweat in three-set demolition of Nicolas Jarry.

Shelton did need two hours and 41 minutes to come through and was on court for two tie-breakers but in the end he ensured he came through 7-6 (3), 7-6 (3), 7-5. The only time that the American faced any issues on his serve was the very first game of the match in which he was broken.

He broke right back and from there on it was all about getting his serves in and winning as many points on serve as possible. In fact Shelton faced just two break-points in the entire match and won 82% of his first serve points for that duration.

Late in the third set, Shelton got his only other break of the encounter and that was enough for him to seal his place in round three.

Popyrin Stuns Fritz in Five Sets

Egged on a partisan Aussie crowd, Popyrin upset the world number nine and one of the dark horses of the tournament, Taylor Fritz in the second round of the competition.

Popyrin slammed 74 winners to go with his 19 aces to remain in contention but more importantly it was that kind of play that ensured he was broken just once in the entire match.

Missing on a match-point in the fourth set tie-breaker did not seem to bother the Aussie too much as he broke Fritz twice in the final set to carve out a 6-7 (4), 7-6 (2), 6-4, 6-7 (6), 6-2 win in just over four hours. Interestingly, Popyrin was coming off a first round win over Chun Hsin Tseng, which also needed him to come back from a set down and win it in five.

And now that Popyrin has tasted what a win over a top-10 player feels like, he would be gunning for a lot more.

Can he, however, keep his emotions in check as he faces Shelton in the third round?

Shelton v Popyrin Prediction and Tip

This is a wild, wild west in terms of who might win it, that we will have to keep away from making wild guesses. As far as the number of sets go, cannot see this one finishing up as a three-setter.
