Caroline Garcia v Laura Siegemund Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came at the 2021 French Open and Garcia had won that in straight sets.

Garcia Quells the Fernandez Challenge

Leylah Fernandez is a top-15 player and while her recent performances haven’t quite been as good as a ranking that high would represent, she always presents a reasonable threat to opponents.

And that is exactly what happened for Garcia too, but the Frenchwoman came away a winner in straight sets to set up this third round meeting with Siegemund.

Garcia needed an hour and 54 minutes to come away a 7-6 (5), 7-5 winner over Fernandez after losing her serve in the fifth game of the opening set. That was the only time though the world number four had her serve broken before she levelled things out in the very next game and then took the set in a tie-breaker.

In the second set, Garcia saved three break-points, including one set-point but then broke Fernandez to love in the 11th game. Off the second match-point she got in the very next game, Garcia completed the win to move into round three.

This follows a 6-3, 6-0 rout of Katerine Sebov in the opener and she will now be gunning for another such win against her 158th-ranked opponent.

Siegemund in a Three-Set Slugfest Again

For the second match in a row, Siegemund was forced to fight back from being a set down and for the second time, she did that and won.

After having gotten past Lucia Bronzetti in her opener, Siegemund was a 5-7, 7-5, 6-3 winner over Irina Begu in a match that lasted nearly three and a quarter hours.

Such was Siegemund’s grittiness, she was down five break-points in the second set having lost the first, but kept putting the ball back in and thwarting Begu. In the 11th game she finally had a chance to break her opponent and that is where she turned the match around in her favour.

Siegemund raced away to a 4-0 lead in the decider and while Begu did manage to pull one back on serve, the German finished off the match with a third break of the set.

This was Siegemund’s fourth successive three-setter following her 0-2 win-loss record at the United Cup. Can he rise up to the occasion and test Garcia?

Garcia v Siegemund Prediction and Tip

Np prizes for guessing who starts off a favourite when the world number four plays the 158th-ranked player. We think Garcia will have no trouble in running past Siegemund here.
