Rune Tames Big-Serving Cressy

Holger Rune advanced into the third round of the Australian Open for the first time, but was there any doubt? Truth be told, Rune looked poised to reach the second week when the draw came out, and his burgeoning reputation gave him an aura of a Top 10 player.

The young Dane produced an assured display of attacking verve and energy to defeat Maxime Cressy. Not often does the tall American manage to post 10 aces in a best-of-five match.

But the aggressive nature of Rune’s return forced Cressy to go for more and that only accounted for aa high number of double faults (14 to be precise).

Rune broke Cressy’s serve at least once in each set to complete a straight sets win.

Humbert Eases Past Kudla

Ugo Humbert’s return to form was long overdue. The Frenchman has rediscovered the form that took him to the cusp of a Top 20 ranking just a year ago, as he cruised into the third of the Australian Open.

Humbert mastered countryman Richard Gasquet in the opening round, and backed up that win by beating American lucky loser Denis Kudla – a late replacement for the injured Nick Kyrgios – in four sets.

Kudla had scored a fine win of his own when he beat Roman Saifullin on Wednesday, but despite pinching the second-set tiebreak, could not contain Humbert’s topspin forehand which saw him give away six service breaks.

Humbert will now attempt to equal his career-best appearance at Grand Slam by reaching the fourth round at Melbourne Park. Will he record the upset?

Rune v Humbert Prediction and Tip

Humbert has gone under the radar coming to this year’s Australian Open. He had a resurgent second half of the campaign and he could potentially re-enter the Top 100 at the end of the fortnight. But Rune’s high-quality return should give him plenty of problems in this matchup, something Maxime Cressy can attest to.
