Iga Swiatek v Elena Rybakina Head to Head

There has been one previous meeting between these players which came at the 2021 Ostrava Open. Swiatek had won that in straight sets to move into the semifinals.

More recently, as a part of their pre-season preparation, both these players had faced off in the World Tennis League in UAE late last year and Rybakina had won that exhibition encounter in straight sets.

Swiatek Has No Worries against Bucsa

Cristina Bucsa is an improving player and will improve drastically from her current world number 100 when the rankings are updated at the end of this tournament. A third round appearance here speaks volumes about her quality.

Against Swiatek though, Bucsa had no chance. Such was the quality, power and precision of the world number one that the match lasted a mere 55 minutes in which Swiatek won 6-0, 6-1. The Polish player faced no break-points and won 85% of her first serves and 79% of the second serves.

Barely anything that left her racquet resulted in an error – she had just six against her – while Swiatek also benefitted from her opponent’s 20 unforced errors.

Swiatek had overcome Jule Niemeier and Camila Osorio in straight sets too in the first two rounds but this was another level one saw of her. That being said, it was also more of how underwhelming Bucsa was on the day and it might not have been a bad idea if Swiatek could have had a slightly more stirring contest heading into the later stages of this tournament.

She now takes on the Wimbledon champion who has recently shown that title win was no fluke.

Rybakina Quells Collins in a Difficult Encounter

Unlike Swiatek, Rybakina did not have the luxury of an ‘easy’ encounter. In fact, far from it.

Rybakina was up against the previous Australian Open runner-up and world number 11, Danielle Collins but knew that as recently as two weeks ago she had beaten the American in Adelaide.

With that knowledge, Rybakina began from where she had left off as she broke her American opponent in the very first game. Consolidating it with a second break in the fifth, Rybakina grabbed the opening set in a jiffy.

It was in the second that Collins showed her mettle, as she saved a break-point before getting herself a break as Rybakina served to stay in the set at 5-6.

Any hopes of a fightback, however, were quelled very early in the decider as Rybakina took the first four games including two off her opponent’s serves and then finished out 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 in two hours and six minutes.

Rybakina had earlier gotten better of Elisabette Cocciaretto and Kaja Juvan, two equally tricky opponents in their own right and her performances in those two matches – not to mention the Collins win – should give her some hope against the world number one.

Swiatek v Rybakina Prediction and Tips

Swiatek is a favourite but Rybakina’s form makes us wary about picking the Polish number one at these current odds. Might see the match get extended to a third though, or at least have one tie-breaker somewhere.
