Cori Gauff v Jelena Ostapenko Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came in the final of the 2019 Linz Open and Gauff had won that in three sets.

Gauff Makes it Eight in a Row

What a start this has been to Gauff’s season. She has now played eight matches and won all of them but most vitally done that in straight sets.

That’s right, eight straight-set wins in a row for Gauff so far in 2023.

The latest of her victims was fellow American Bernarda Pera, who tried to put up a fight and yet went down 6-3, 6-2 in an hour and 35 minutes. Gauff served seven aces, hit 23 winners and 11 lesser unforced errors than her opponent to seal her berth in round four.

Gauff, who has been to the fourth round at this tournament once before in her career but never beyond that, had 16 break-points and got four breaks of serves. If anything, she could have been more clinical on them but that aside, did a good job of keeping Pera away from her serve.

The only time Gauff was broken in the match was while serving for a 5-1 lead, but she followed it up with a break of her own to win the match off her fourth match-point.

A maiden quarterfinal berth awaits Gauff if this is the way she can keep playing.

Ostapenko Bundles Out Baindl

Kateryna Baindl proved to be no match for Ostapenko as the Latvian made it to the fourth round of Australian Open for the first time in her career. Ostapenko, who is a French Open winner from 2017, routed Baindl 6-3, 6-0 in an hour and eight minutes to end up in the round of 16.

Rather interestingly, Ostapenko faced just one break-point in the entire match and was broken, and that happened in the first game of the encounter.

From that point onward, it was one-way traffic in Ostapenko’s favour who broke right back, and then again in the next two games. She needed four set-points but finally closed out to take the lead.

The second set was even better with Ostapenko dropping just four points on serve and breaking Baindl three times from the four chances she got.

This follows victories over Dayana Yastremska and Anna Bondar in the first two rounds, with her traditional aggressive playing style from the baseline.

What’s interesting to note is that in the Baindl match, she won 10 of her 11 points while coming to the net, after having won just seven points there from the previous two rounds. Is it a sign of things to come?

Gauff v Ostapenko Prediction and Tips

Gauff will be a huge favourite here at 1/2 but we could see Ostapenko try to come to the net more often to try and disrupt her opponent’s rhythm. A fighting set could be on the show but that’s about where things could end for the Latvian.
