Karen Khachanov v Yoshihito Nishioka Head to Head

At the highest level there have been two meetings between these two players – at the 2019 Australian Open and the 2022 Washington Open. Khachanov won the former, Nishioka won at the latter.

Other than that, they also faced off in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics where Khachanov had come back from a set down to defeat Nishioka.

Nishioka in Career-Best Showing

Before coming into this year’s Australian Open, Nishioka had made the third round of a Grand Slam just once. It was at this very tournament in 2020.

For the first time in his career, he now features in a fourth round match at a major and if things go to plan he might even be looking to break into the top 30 of the ATP Rankings for the first time.

So how did he get to this stage? A semifinalist at the Adelaide International two weeks ago, Nishioka sent Mackenzie McDonald packing in the third round in straight sets to carve out a place in the round of 16 for himself.

McDonald, who had dumped an injured Rafael Nadal out of the competition in the previous round, had his moments in the first set which Nishioka then won in a tie-breaker. Following that, however, the Japanese number one firmly shut the door on his opponent’s face with a 6-3, 6-2 scoreline in the next two.

The match lasted two hours and 20 minutes and saw Nishioka drop his serve just twice while breaking McDonald six times. Both players hit 28 winners but while Nishioka managed to restrict his unforced errors to 33, his opponent had 53 of those against his name.

Nishioka will be aware of the fact that he might not get the same benefit from his next opponent, so could need to tweak his game around and blast a few more winners as he gets more comfortable.

Can he make the last eight stage?

Khachanov Stuns Tiafoe in Third Round

On paper there wasn’t too much difference between Khachanov and Tiafoe, with the American entering the match as a 4/5 favourite. Khachanov, however, had shown traces of some rhythm in the lead-up to this tournament and managed to overturn the odds as he pulled off a four-set win.

In a match lasting three hours and 33 minutes, Khachanov took nearly saw his two-set lead get blown away when he lost the third set and was 1-6 down in the fourth set tie-breaker.

Tiafoe blew away five set-points in a row and another one later, while Khachanov converted his third match-point to clinch it 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (9) and enter round four.

Khachanov fired 20 aces but the main difference between the two players was the unforced errors count. While the Russian made only 27 of them, Tiafoe had a higher winners count and a way higher unforced error count too, as he lost 53 points to that.

This follows wins over Bernabe Zapata Miralles and Jason Kubler, which have all combined to deliver Khachanov his best showing at the Australian Open.

This could represent the Russian’s best chance of making it to the quarterfinal.

Khachanov v Nishioka Prediction and Tips

Can Khachanov pull off the rabbit here and make it to the quarterfinal for the first time at this tournament? We think he has the game for it, especially in a best-of-five encounter but it could get touch and go. Four or five sets in the encounter.
