Tough Auger-Aliassime Continues to Advance

After a huge comeback effort in the second round, Felix Auger-Aliassime won a four-set contest against Francisco Cerundolo in the third round on Friday to make it to the last 16 of the Australian Open for the third consecutive year.

The Canadian, who made his debut at the Melbourne major in 2020, had reached the fourth round in 2021 and the quarterfinals last year. He is coming off a sensational trophy-laden season and the sixth seed is seen as one of the top contenders to reach the final four.

It was the third straight match when the world no. 7 lost at least a set but he once again came out on top. In the opening contest, it was Vasek Pospisil, who took the first set and then took Auger-Aliiassime into the tiebreak in the next two sets but Auger-Aliassime won both the tiebreaks and then edged the fourth for a 1-6, 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 comeback win. That first round contest against his compatriot was a four-hour affair and it was followed by a three-hour five-set second-round clash against Alex Molcan.

Auger-Aliassime had lost the first two sets against Molcan, but turned the tables in the next three to win 3-6, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2.

The third round contest was also a long affair with the Canadian coming through in two hours and 38 minutes. Auger-Aliassime was dominant for most parts of the contest. It was only in the second set when Cerundolo was able to break the Canadian twice to tie the match at one set apiece.

However, Auger-Aliassime quickly overcame the setback and found his rhythm back to complete a 6-1, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory.

Auger-Aliassime had won 60 matches last season and picked his first four tour-level titles. He didn’t have a great start to 2023, falling in the opener in Adelaide, but he has found the winning touch in Melbourne and is looking dangerous as the tournament progresses.

Auger-Aliassime’s Road to Fourth Round

  • beat Vasek Pospisil 1-6, 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-3), 6-3
  • beat Alex Molcan 3-6, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2
  • beat Francisco Cerundolo 6-1, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4

Lehecka Stuns Norrie

2022 NextGen finalist Jiri Lehecka is continuing to impress at the Australian Open.

The Czech player, who had never won a Grand Slam match prior to this year has now won three in Melbourne. His latest win came over Britain’s Cameron Norrie on Friday, as he stunned the 11th seed in a five-set third-round contest.

Lehecka, who was beaten by the Briton in the second round in Auckland earlier this month, twice found himself a set down in the match on Friday, but he bounced back and then ran away with the final two sets for a 6-7 (8-10), 6-3, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory.

The world no. 71 had squandered three set points in the first-set tiebreak, but he made a good recovery in the second, to draw level. Norrie, however, got his nose in front once again as he got the solitary break of the third set, but Lehecka roared back and was in complete control of the final two sets as he advanced to the fourth round.

It was the second seeded player that the 21-year-old took down in the tournament. He had upset the 21st seed Borna Coric 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 in the first round.

In the second round, Lehecka had ousted America’s Christopher Eubanks in four.

Can he pull off another upset in the fourth rounnd? It will be the first time when he meets Auger-Aliassime. Given how competitive he has been in the tournament, he may take a set of the world no 7, but beating Auger-Alliassime would be an uphill task.

Lehecka’s Road to Fourth Round

  • beat Borna Coric 6-3, 6-3, 6-3
  • beat Christopher Eubanks 6-4, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3
  • beat Cameron Norrie 6-7 (8-10), 6-3, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4
