Khachanov Passes Tiafoe Test

It was a test of character and at times a test of nerves for Karen Khachanov, who successfully advanced into the fourth round of the Australian Open with a four-set win over Frances Tiafoe.

It is the first time he has cleared that hurdle having fallen at the third round stage in each of the last four visits. Khachanov needed his monstrous hitting to find its range against one of the ATP’s athletic baseliners.

The Russian edged out Tiafoe 6-3 6-4 3-6 7-6, stealing the fourth-set tiebreak while trailing 1-6. Overall, Khachanov tallied 20 aces, and broke Tiafoe’s serve four times.

It is the second successive Grand Slam that Khachanov has made the second week after last year’s US Open semifinal showing. And with a winnable fourth-round match on the cards, the Russian could have his breakthrough moment at last at this level.

Nishioka Downs Nadal’s Conqueror McDonald

Yoshihito Nishioka defeated Mackenzie McDonald 7-6 6-3 6-2, marking it the first time he has reached the fourth round of a Grand Slam.

It was also a milestone win for Nishioka, who became just the third Japanese man to record 100 match wins at Tour level. The 27-year-old has played some great tennis over the last 18 months and has helped fill the void of the injured countryman Kei Nishikori.

Nishioka and McDonald played a tight first set, which went the 31st seed’s way. But it looked like the American, who stunned the defending champion 48 hours earlier, was struggling with an ab injury after that, and resorted to playing underarm serves.

McDonald was broken six times in the next two sets as his physical capabilities were hampered.
