Aryna Sabalenka v Belinda Bencic Head to Head

There have been two previous meetings between these and both players have won one. The first came at the 2018 New Haven Open which Sabalenka clinched in straight sets before Bencic needed a final set tie-breaker to pull one over her opponent in Dubai in 2019.

Sabalenka Makes it Seven in Seven

Elise Mertens has been a world number 12 and while she has lost some of her best singles form in recent times, she is still a force to reckon with. Against Sabalenka, her former doubles partner and friend, Mertens has always struggled and that is exactly what happened in their round match too.

Sabalenka, who had entered the match on the back of six successive wins in the season, made it 7-0 on win-loss when she routed Mertens 6-2, 6-3. In doing so, Sabalenka made it to the fourth round here for the third time in a row.

In a matching lasting just an hour and 15 minutes, Sabalenka broke Mertens in the fourth and eighth games of the first set to race away with the lead. She took a 2-0 lead in the second but dropped her serve in the third game as the two players went neck in neck till 4-3.

The Belarusian player then broke Mertens in the next game before serving it out to grab her fourth round spot.

With a Adelaide International title victory already under her belt, Sabalenka then had sent Tereza Martincova and Shelby Rogers packing in the first two rounds. And now with a win over Mertens in the manner she has, seems to have thrown the gauntlet to the likes of Iga Swiatek and Cori Gauff.

First up though, Sabalenka will look to finish off Belinda Bencic in the competition.

Bencic 8-1 after Giorgi Win

While Bencic has lost a match this year it had come at the hands of Iga Swiatek in the United Cup. Other than that, much like Sabalenka, she has a title under her belt and has won eight matches in 2023.

The eighth of those wins came against Camila Giorgi, whom sent packing 6-2, 7-5 in an hour and 41 minutes to reach the fourth round.

Bencic, who had last made the fourth round at Australian Open in 2016, lost her serve twice in the second set but found a way to get past Giorgi’s serve three times there. In all, she broke Giorgi five times in the encounter.

Rather interestingly, it was Giorgi who hit more winners than Bencic but where the Swiss number one scored over her opponent was her first serve win percentage which read a solid 69%. In turn, Giorgi’s was at a mere 49%.

Now comes Bencic’s first real threat and if the Swiss needs to be in with a chance, she will need to come up with her own ways to defend against the booming Sabalenka forehand.

Sabalenka v Bencic Prediction and Tips

In her current form, there are very few who can stop Sabalenka and we think Bencic isn’t one of them. Sabalenka looks like she has an extra gear up her sleeve and we might see her employ that, with a straight-set win not beyond reach either.
