Rublev Too Strong for Evans

Fifth seed Andrey Rublev delivered a strong performance at the Australian Open on Saturday, breezing past Daniel Evans in two hours and 11 minutes.

The Russian was aggressive throughout the match and struck 60 winners during a 6-4, 6-2, 6-3 victory. Rublev wasn’t broken in the match as he saved all four of the break points that he faced. In contrast, he held 15 break points in the match and converted four of them.

The world no. 6 is into the fourth round of the Australian Open for the third time in his seventh try. He lost in the Round of 16 in 2020 and in the last eight stage in 2021. He has featured in six major quarterfinals, but the 12-time tour-level champion has never gone on to reach the semis.

Can he make it that far this year? He looks on course at the moment. Rublev started his campaign with a 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 victory over Dominic Thiem and then edged out Emil Ruusuvuori 6-2, 6-4, 6-7 (2-7), 6-3 in round 2.

The 25-year-old has been relentless over the first three rounds and has hit as many as 144 winners combined and has been broken just once.

While he will be looking to keep the form going, he faces a huge challenge in the fourth round as Holger Rune is in top form as well and he defeated Rublev in their only meeting at the Paris Masters last year.

Rublev’s Road to Fourth Round

  • beat Dominic Thiem 6-3, 6-4, 6-2
  • beat Emil Ruusuvuori 6-2, 6-4, 6-7 (2-7), 6-3
  • beat Daniel Evans 6-4, 6-2, 6-3

Rune Survives Injury Scare, Beats Humbert

Ninth seed Holger Rune survived an injury scare in the third round of the Australian Open on Saturday, but the 19-year-old got over it soon and ousted Ugo Humbert in straight sets to march forward in the tournament.

Rune rolled his ankle and fell on court during the first game of the second set and seemed in pain. He was attended by a physio and although things became a bit tough for him from that moment on, he still remained composed and managed to beat the Frenchman in straight sets.

The world no. 10 converted 4 of 7 break points and saved 2 of 3 to win the two-hour-and-eight-minute contest 6-4, 6-2, 7-6 (7-5).

Rune is playing in just his second Australian Open. He was knocked out in the first round on his debut last year. Twelve months on, he is a different player. He was incredible last year, particularly at the back end of the season, when he finished by reaching four consecutive finals. He won two of those indoor finals, and that included the Paris Masters title.

In all, Rune won three titles from five finals last year. Picking up from where he left, he has shown sensational form at the Australian Open. Rune defeated Filip Krajinović 6-2, 6-3, 6-4 in the opening round and Maxime Cressy 7-5, 6-4, 6-4 in the next round.

In the third round on Saturday, Rune didn’t give Humbert much of a chance in the first two rounds, but the world no. 106 posed a challenge in the third set tiebreak. He was up 2-4 in the tiebreak, but couldn’t hold on to the lead for long as Rune came back to clinch the contest.

If his ankle doesn’t bother him over the next two days, we could be in for a high-octane fourth round contest between Rune and Rublev.

Rune’s Road to Fourth Round

  • beat Filip Krajinović 6-2, 6-3, 6-4
  • beat Maxime Cressy 7-5, 6-4, 6-4
  • beat Ugo Humbert 6-4, 6-2, 7-6 (7-5)
