Sabalenka Storms Into Round of 16

Aryna Sabalenka stormed into the fourth round of the Australian Open with a straight sets shellacking of Elise Mertens in the Round of 32 on Saturday.

The Belarusian has been in ruthless form recently and she extended her unbeaten run in 2023 to seven matches as she raced past the 32nd seed Mertens 6-2, 6-3 in just an hour and 15 minutes.

Broken once by the Belgian in the contest, Sabalenka converted 4 of 7 break points and struck 32 winners to reach the last 16 for the third time in Melbourne. This is her sixth main draw appearance at the Australian Open, and the third consecutive year when she has reached this far. However, she has never gone beyond the last 16.

When it comes to Grand Slams, she is a three-time semifinalist and was in the final four in the last major at the U.S. Open. The way she has begun the new year, it won’t be a surprise if this turns out to be her best ever run at the majors. Sabalenka won four matches in a row to win the Adelaide1 title and she carried that form to Melbourne winning her first three rounds with ease. What’s more, she is yet to drop a set this year, having won all seven in straight sets.

At the Australian Open, Sabalenka started her campaign with a 6-1, 6-4 win against Tereza Martincová and then defeated Shelby Rogers 6-3, 6-1 in the second round.

An 11-time champion from 19 finals, Sabalenka reached three finals last year, including the final of the season-ending WTA Finals tournament, but couldn’t win a title. She has already tasted success in the very first tournament this year and is looking hungry for more.

Sabalenka’s Road to Fourth Round

  • beat Tereza Martincová 6-1, 6-4
  • beat Shelby Rogers 6-3, 6-1
  • beat Elise Mertens 6-2, 6-3

Bencic Motors Along

Like Sabalenka, Belinda Bencic, too, is on a seven-match winning streak and the Swiss is yet to drop a set at the Australian Open, after she registered her third win in the tournament on Saturday by dumping out Italy’s Camila Giorgi in an-hour-and-41-minute contest.

Bencic, who won four matches to claim the Adelaide-2 crown in the tune up to the season’s first major, has maintained that intensity at the Australian Open, as a result of which she has made it to the last 16 for the second time in her 10th appearance. The last time she reached this far, it was in 2016. She is yet to make it to the quarterfinals in Melbourne, but given the sort of form she is in, she would be backing herself to give Sabalenka a run for her mooney on Monday.

Bencic, who topped Daria Kasatkina, for the Adelaide-2 crown, began her Australian Open campaign with a 6-1, 6-2 drubbing of Viktoriya Tomova in the first round. She faced some resistance from Claire Liu in the second round, but survived the test, beating the American 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 in an hour and 51 minutes.

Against Giorgi on Saturday, the world no. 10 looked comfortable in the first set, but was run close in the second, with the world no. 70 coming back from a break down twice. However, a third break in the set, sealed the contest for the seven-time tour level champion.

Bencic has a 1-1 record against Sabalenka but they haven’t met since 2019. The Swiss won’t be the favourite in the match, going by how Sabalenka’s been playing recently. But given that she too has an 8-1 record in 2023, the Belarusian will have to be on her toes throughout the match. Expect this match to be a cracking fourth round contest.

Bencic’s Road to Fourth Round

  • beat Viktoriya Tomova 6-1, 6-2
  • beat Claire Liu 7-6 (7-3), 6-3
  • beat Camila Giorgi 6-2, 7-5
