Vekic Knocks Out Parrizas Diaz
Donna Vekic’s stunning unbeaten run in 2023 continued as she eased past Nuria Parrizas Diaz in the third round of the Australian Open on Saturday.
Vekic needed just 64 minutes to beat the Spaniard 6-2, 6-2 and extend her perfect run in 2023 to 6-0. She also featured in two Exhibition matches in Kooyong and won both of them. Thus she has won all eight of her matches this year and is looking unstoppable at the moment.
This is the second time in her 11th appearance in Melbourne that Vekic has made it to the fourth round and, given her form at the moment, she looks primed to make her quarterfinal debut in the tournament. She has featured in just one Grand slam quarterfinal in her career and that was at the U.S. Open in 2019.
Vekic, who won all three of her matches at the United Cup earlier this month, began her Australian Open campaign with a tough three-set win over Russian qualifier Oksana Selekhmeteva. She put up a much-improved performance in the second round, cruising past 18th seed Liudmila Samsonova 6-3, 6-0 and maintained the intensity in the round fo 32.
While she was broken twice by Parrizas Diaz on Saturday, she converted six of seven break points to advance.
It will be interesting to see if she can continue her winning momentum intact in the next round.

Fruhvirtova Edges Past Vondrousova
It’s been a terrific Australian Open debut for 17-year-old Linda Fruhvirtova, and she keeps getting better. The Czech, who breezed past a couple of Australians in the first two rounds, edged out compatriot Marketa Vondrousova in a three-set third round contest on Saturday.
In a closely contested match, both players broke each other three times each in the first set, before Fruhvirtova sealed it with another break in the final game.
Vondrousova, who was a French Open finalist in 2019, made a resounding comeback in the second, breaking the younger opponent twice and tying the match at one-set all.
Fruhvirtova, who won her maiden WTA title in Chennai last year, didn’t start the deciding set well, conceding a break in the very first game. Vondrousova then had a chance to go up by two breaks in the fifth game, but Fruhvirtova saved the break point at 30-40 and went on to hold serve.
Things changed from that point, as the world no. 82 took charge of the match and won the next four games as well to seal a 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 victory.
Fruhvirtova, who made her Grand Slam debut at the U.S. Open last year, is coming off a 34-21 season, which also included an ITF title in Cancun, Mexico, in addition to her first WTA triumph.
Fruhvirtova had begun 2022 at no. 279, but has seen phenomenal rise over the last one year. Can she keep impressing by advancing to the quarterfinals of what is just her second Grand Slam tournament?
