Bautista Agut Ends Murray’s Heroic Run

It had to be Roberto Bautista Agut, the man to play the role of the pantomime villain. The ATP’s workhorse was indeed the player who ended Andy Murray’s 2023 Australian Open campaign in another bruising battle.

This time, it ended in four sets and precisely three and a half hours of action. Murray looked like a spent force in the opening set less than 48 hours after playing the longest match of his career in beating Thanasi Kokkinakis. And it took the Spanish veteran just 29 minutes to run away with the set, landing 84% first serves and breaking Murray twice.

In the second set, Murray rediscovered his form and began to loosen up. Despite going down a break, the Briton recovered and forced a tiebreak where he saved two set points and stole the set.

Another dramatic end was in store, but Bautista Agut never read the script. He broke Murray towards the end of the third set and restored his lead. And it was clear as the match went the distance, Murray’s body would not quite hold up. It took 50 winners out of Bautista Agut’s wand to finally put Murray down.

Paul Outclasses Compatriot Brooksby

Tommy Paul advanced into the second week of a Grand Slam for the second time, at the expense of Jenson Brooksby in an all-American clash in the third round of the Australian Open.

Paul won 6-1 6-4 6-3 in two hours and 8 minutes, and with it a date against 24th seed Roberto Bautista Agut for the fifth time in their series.

The New Jersey native outclassed compatriot Brooksby in a match that was so disappointing from a spectacle point of view. Not that Paul would care. He was simply uncontrollable right from the get-go, racing to take the first set 6-1, and dropping just a single point on serve.

Brooksby did put up a fight in the second, but the match was pretty much over as a contest when he was broken and conceded the set. And Paul put the finishing touches of a one-sided match, clocking his fastest serve at 135 mph and breaking Brooksby twice to wrap up the win.
