Garcia Overcomes Slow Start to Win
Caroline Garcia booked her place in the second week of the Australian Open with a comeback win against Germany’s Laura Siegemund.
The Frenchwoman, who is one of the tournament favorites this fortnight, found himself in a deep hole after she was outplayed Siegemund for a set and a half.
The serve which is the cornerstone to everything good that Garcia does on a court was nonexistent in the first set. And Siegemund took full advantage, winning 44% of points behind the return.
Garcia, however, hit back and improved her first serve numbers substantially from 56% in the first set to 77% in the second. she also injected a sufficient amount of pace in her ground strokes to hit through the German, firing 13 winners.
The fourth seed leveled proceedings, and in the decider she rode on that wave of momentum, breaking Siegemund three times to clinch a hard-fought victory.
Caroline Garcia’s Road to Fourth Round
- Garcia defeated Katherine Sebov 1-6 6-3 6-3 in the first round
- Garcia defeated Leylah Fernandez 7-6 7-5 in the second round
- Garcia defeated Laura Siegemund 1-6 6-3 6-3 in the third round

Linette Makes it two Poles in the Last 16
Magda Linette was 0-6 in third-round matches at Grand Slam level. That stat weighed heavily on her shoulders when she took on Ekaterina Alexadnrova who was also looking to puncture this hurdle in a Major for the first time.
Linette came through in straight sets, absorbing the Russian’s power like a sponge in water, and ensured there will be two Polish players in the women’s section of the draw in the last 16 (joining World No. Iga Swiatek).
Right from the off, Linette stamped her authority in this match playing a stunning drop shot in the first game of the match. The two players quickly exchanged breaks in the first set, but it was Alexandrova who was next to blink in game 8, leaving Linette to serve for a one-set lead.
The second set was one-way traffic. Linette’s pure ball striking was giving Alexandrova very little room to get back into the match. The World No. 45 raced to a 5-1 lead, although she needed two bites of the cherry to close out the win.
Magda Linette’s Road to Fourth Round
- Linette defeated Mayar Sherif 7-5 6-1 in the first round
- Linette defeated Anett Kontaveit 3-6 6-3 6-4 in the second round
- Linette defeated Ekaterina Alexandrova 6-3 6-4 in the third round
