Wolf Eases Past Mmoh
J.J. Wolf made it to the second week of the Australian Open with a straight-sets win over Michael Mmoh. Both players were searching for a Grand Slam breakthrough this fortnight, for Mmoh in particular, an unlikely route into the fourth round.
Having stunned Alexander Zverev in the previous round, Mmoh looked to dominate with his quick feet around the court. And he was rewarded by breaking Wolf’s serve at the first attempt. Remarkably that was the only chink of sunlight in what turned out to be a frustrating afternoon for the lucky loser.
Wolf won four games on the trot from 2-4 down to win the most competitive set of the match. From that moment on, the Ohio native was simply unplayable from the baseline, ripping his forehand with power and accuracy.
Wolf broke Mmoh’s serve twice in the second and third sets to book his spot in the fourth round. Overall, he tallied 36 winners to his opponent’s 11, and his burgeoning experience at Tour level in the past year proved substantial.
J.J. Wolf’s Road to Fourth Round
- Wolf defeated Jordan Thompson 6-3 3-6 6-4 7-5 in the first round
- Wolf defeated Diego Schwartzman 6-1 6-4 6-4 in the second round
- Wolf defeated Michael Mmoh 6-4 6-1 6-2 in the third round

Shelton Holds Off Popyrin
In perhaps the most widen open quarter of this year’s Australian Open, it is the Americans who have excelled. And we’re now guaranteed of an American quarterfinalist when J.J. Wolf takes on Melbourne Park debutant Ben Shelton.
Shelton, a three-time champion on the Challenger Tour, burst onto the scene in the second half of last season. And like the great American players of the past, he embodies the powerful weaponry of a huge first serve and puts in some serious footwork in the way he runs around the court.
The 20-year-old did to Alexei Popyrin what the Aussie did so well against Taylor Fritz the other day – which was to take the game to him.
Popyrin, even with the lion’s share of home support, couldn’t get a sniff of the Shelton serve. The four chances he had were nullified with aplomb. Shelton completed a 6-3 7-6 6-4 win in one of the finest displays yet in his short Grand Slam career.
Ben Shelton’s Road to Fourth Round
- Shelton defeated Zhizhen Zhang 4-6 6-3 6-2 2-6 7-6 in the first round
- Shelton defeated Nicolas Jarry 7-6 7-6 7-5 in the second round
- Shelton defeated Alexei Popyrin 6-3 7-6 6-4 in the third round
