Karen Khachanov v Sebastian Korda Head to Head

There have been three previous meetings between Khachanov and Korda and all of them have come in the period between 2021 and 2022. The first one was won by Khachanov in 2021 at Wimbledon in a raging five-setter which went to 10-8 in the final set.

After that Korda has had the better of his opponent, winning at Cincinnati and Antwerp last year.

Khachanov in a Nishioka Rout

For two sets and two games into the third set, Khachanov hadn’t allowed his fourth round opponent, Yoshihito Nishioka a look-in. And when I say that I mean, Nishioka hadn’t won a game.

That’s correct, Khachanov led 6-0, 6-0, 2-0 at one stage before Nishioka finally broke the Russian and levelled things out in the next game. From that point on, the Japanese number one did well to hold on to his serve and even had a couple of break-points.

In the tie-breaker that followed, however, Khachanov found his bearings again and stormed to a 6-0, 6-0, 7-6 (4) win to reach the quarterfinal of this tournament for the first time. Interestingly, such was Khachanov’s dominance that he lost just two points in the entirety of the second set!

This will also be the fourth time overall that the Russian has made the last eight in a Grand Slam and second time in a row after finishing a semifinalist last US Open.

The former Paris Masters winner had earlier also gotten the better of Frances Tiafoe in the third round and with the one-sided nature of this win in the fourth, he has looked more and more in charge of his game.

Can he now up the ante a little more against the toughest challenge he faces in this competition this season?

Korda Scrapes Past Hurkacz

Korda, who kicked his season off with an appearance at the Adelaide International where he lost to Novak Djokovic, needed five sets to get past Hubert Hurkacz in his fourth round match here.

Having never reached the fourth round at Melbourne Park before this, Korda needed three and a half hours to get past Hurkacz.

The American had already shocked Daniil Medvedev in straight sets in the previous round but here, he needed to dig a lot deeper in phases. Things didn’t begin on the right note for Korda who was broken in the very first game but he slowly grasped control of the encounter in the second and third sets.

He broke the Polish number one once in the second and started off the third with two breaks.

But just when it looked like the momentum had shifted drastically in his favour, Hukacz looked to have found his range, getting at least one break-point in every game that Korda served in the fourth set.

He broke Korda twice too to wrap up the equaliser, and then served his way through to 5-5 in the final set. The Pole had a chance to even break Korda in the 11th game but the American held on under pressure and in the ensuing tie-breaker, raced off to a 7-3 lead after being 2-3 down.

Very soon he wrapped things up to enter the quarterfinal in a major for just the second time in his career. A maiden semifinal awaits the American.

Khachanov v Korda Prediction and Tips

While Khachanov had a brilliant outing against Nishioka we don’t see how he will make it past the complete package that is Korda. The only worry for Korda would be recovering from his five-setter especially this late in the competition but we still think he will find a way through.
