Pegula Marches On

Third seed Jessica Pegula moved into a third consecutive Australian Open quarterfinal as the American knocked out Barbora Krejcikova in the fourth round on Sunday.

With top seed Iga Swiatek knocked out in the fourth round by Elena Rybakina on Sunday and second seed Ons Jabeur also falling earlier in the tournament, Pegula is now the highest seed remaining in women’s singles.

On Sunday, she had 18 opportunities to break Krejcikova’s serve but she could capitalise on just five of them. She was disappointed to have missed out on 13 break points but was still the dominant player in the contest as she ousted the world no. 23, 7-5, 6-3 in an hour and 41 minutes.

The World no. 3 is yet to drop a set in the tournament. She demolished Jaqueline Cristian 6-0, 6-1, held off Aliaksandra Sasnovich 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) and handed Marta Kostyuk a 6-0, 6-2 drubbing in the first three rounds respectively.

Sunday’s win was Pegula’s eighth consecutive in the 2023 season. She had lost her season opener in the United Cup but then won four in a row to help the United States in their successful campaign at the inaugural mixed-gender tournament.

Improving to 8-1, she is now looking like a player to beat in the women’s draw. She has never gone past the last eight stage of a Grand Slam in her four previous attempts. Will it be fifth time lucky for the 28-year-old.

Pegula’s Road to Fourth Round

  • beat Jaqueline Cristian 6-0, 6-1
  • beat Aliaksandra Sasnovich 6-2, 7-6 (7-5)
  • beat Marta Kostyuk 6-0, 6-2
  • beat Barbora Krejcikova 7-5, 6-3

Azarenka Rallies Past Zhu

Two-time Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka is back into the quarterfinals of the Melbourne major for the first time since 2016.

The Belarusian had not gone beyond the fourth round of a major since reaching the final of the U.S. Open in 2020. But the 33-year-old is back in the last eight of a major, following back-to-back come-from-behind wins in Melbourne.

First, she rallied to beat 10th seed Madison Keys in the third round on Friday, while on Sunday, she overturned a one-set deficit to knock out world no. 87 Zhu Lin, who had stunned the sixth seed Maria Sakkari in the third round.

Broken in the very first game of the match by the Chinese, Azarenka broke back in the fourth game, only to concede another break a couple of games later. Zhu didn’t make another mistake in the set as she took a one-set-to-love lead. The Belarusian made a resounding comeback in the second set, building a 5-0 lead before Zhu finally held a serve. But Azarenka served out the set in the next game to force the decider.

Neither player could hold serve in the first six games of an intriguing final set, which saw Zhu go toe to toe with Azarenka. However, a fourth break for Azarenka proved to be decisive as she clinched the two hour and 40 minute contest 4-6, 6-1, 6-4.

A champion here in 2012 and 2013, Azarenka is also a three-time U.S. Open finalist, but has not won a Grand Slam outside Melbourne. She has got off to a great start in 2023 and improved her season record to 6-2 following Sunday’s win. Can she get closer to her third Australian Open crown on Tuesday?

She has a 2-2 record against Pegula and lost their only meeting of 2022 in Guadalajara in October. The semifinal match was also Azarenka’s final match of the season.

Azarenka’s Road to Quarterfinal

  • beat Sofia Kenin 6-4, 7-6 (7-3)
  • beat Nadia Podoroska 6-1, 6-0
  • beat Madison Keys 1-6, 6-2, 6-1
  • beat Zhu Lin 4-6, 6-1, 6-4
