Karolina Pliskova v Magda Linette Head to Head

Counting all the circuits and stages of competitions, nine previous meetings between these two have resulted in seven wins for Pliskova.

They last played at the Billie Jean King Cup last season and it was Linette who had won that encounter in straight sets. Four meetings between these two in the  main draw at the highest level have resulted in four wins for Pliskova.

Pliskova Tames Zhang

Shuai Zhang is a higher-ranked player than Pliskova at the moment but given the former world number one’s form, even the bookmakers did not care too much for their respective rankings.

And Pliskova lived up to the 9/20 odds that were on offer for her win and cruised into the last eight stage with plenty of ammo to spare in her tank.

Pliskova, who is yet to drop a set in the competition so far, was a 6-0, 6-4 winner over Zhang in a match lasting a mere 57 minutes. She slammed 12 aces and hit a whopping 33 winners as compared to a sum total of eight aces and winners from the racquet of her opponent.

And when there was nothing to choose in the unforced errors of the two players, it wasn’t too surprising which way the match was going to head.

The only time Pliskova did have some trouble was in the sixth game of the second set when Zhang broke her to take a 4-2 lead. The Czech player responded with four successive games, including two breaks of serves to set up a last eight meeting with Linette.

Linette Keeps the Polish Flag Flying

The two Polish players who were expected to do well, Iga Swiatek and Hubert Hurkacz, had both bitten the dust yesterday. Linette, who had kick-started the season ranked 48th in the world, had moved up three places thanks to 3-1 record at the United Cup but not too many expected her to vroom into the quarterfinals at any stage.

Especially not after Linette had also fallen in the first round of the Hobart International in the week before this tournament.

But here we are, with Swiatek and Hurkacz both out in the fourth round and Linette having reached the last eight with a stunning win over the world number four.

Linette needed nearly two hours to get there but eventually defeated the WTA Finals winner from last season in straight sets, winning 7-6 (3), 6-4. And it wasn’t a straightforward win either what with Linette going two breaks and 3-0 down in the first set to Garcia.

The Pole retaliated with one of her in the fourth game and then levelled things out when Garcia served for the set at 5-4. She quickly wrapped up the tie-breaker and was at her clinical best in the second set as she faced no break-points in the entire set.

And with the break of serve coming in the ninth game, Linette ensured she wouldn’t have too many worries serving it out and marching into the quarterfinals.

Before this tournament, Linette had never made it past the third round at any major. She is now in the quarterfinals with a decent chance of taking a step further.

Pliskova v Linette Prediction and Tips

Pliskova has barely dropped any games in the entire tournament and has been serving with the kind of quality she had when she was a top-10 player. Expect her to stall the Pliskova fairy-tale and enter the semis.
