With pre-tournament favourite and world number one Iga Swiatek failing to live up to her top billing and the in-form youngster Cori Gauff also fumbling in the fourth round of the women’s singles competition, it’s over to Aryna Sabalenka to now try and win the Australian Open 2023 title.

Sabalenka has shortened to 9/4 (with bet365) to emerge a first-time champion at the season’s opening major this year following her fourth round rout of Belinda Bencic on Tuesday.

Having not lost a single set this season, Sabalenka has now emerged a strong contender to go all the way as she improved to 8-0 on win-loss record for the season.

Coming into the tournament on the back of a title at Adelaide, Sabalenka had already sent Tereza Martincova, Shelby Rogers and former doubles partner Elise Mertens out of the competition before she turned the screws on Bencic.

She will be joined by Wimbledon winner Elena Rybakina in the last eight, who had earlier shocked the world number one Swiatek in her fourth round match.

Rybakina, who is now a second favourite to lift the title (at 11/4 with bet365), hadn’t had much of time on court in the lead-up to the 2023 Australian Open but has suddenly emerged a strong contender.

A second round exit at Adelaide International 1 and another first round loss at the Adelaide International 2 wasn’t ideal preparation for the Kazakh but she has done well since then.

She had squeaked past last year’s runner-up Danielle Collins in the third round and then defeated Swiatek in the fourth to set up a tasty clash with Jelena Ostapenko in the quarterfinals. Ostapenko, herself a former French Open winner, is showing signs of playing some steady tennis and starts off a 11/1 favourite to win this according to 888Sport.

Between Sabalenka and Rybakina in the favourites list is Jessica Pegula, who is herself on a eight-match winning streak. She had started the season off on a losing note, going down to Petra Kvitova in her United Cup opener, but since then has won everything.

This has included wins over Iga Swiatek, Marta Kostyuk and most recently, Barbora Krejcikova. And again, Pegula hasn’t dropped a set in any of those eight wins.

She is 11/4 to win this with bet365, slightly ahead of Rybakina but will need to first get past the two-time Australian Open winner and veteran tennis star Victoria Azarenka in her quarterfinal.

Azarenka (who is 12/1 at 888Sport) has had her own difficulties but she has managed to find a way past Sofia Kenin in the first round and Madison Keys in the third. In the fourth, Azarenka needed three sets to get past the little-known Chinese player Lin Zhu and now has her most difficult match of the tournament up against her.

The remaining title winning odds (at bet365) in the women’s section of the draw are as follows:

  • Karolina Pliskova: 10/1
  • Donna Vekic: 12/1
  • Magda Linette: 18/1
