Stefanos Tsitsipas v Karen Khachanov Head to Head

There have been five previous meetings between these two players and Tsitsipas has won every single time. Three of these came in outdoor hardcourt competitions including the 2021 Rogers Cup.

Khachanov Too Powerful, Also Aided by Korda Injury

Sebastian Korda was a slight favourite entering his quarterfinal against Khachanov but a wrist injury put an early end to his match as he retired from the encounter in the third set.

This isn’t to say that Khachanov did not have the better of their exchanges, as the Russian led two sets to love and was leading 3-0 at the time of Korda’s retirement.

The Russian had a chance to serve out the first set at 5-4 but eventually won it in the following tie-breaker. In the second, the score was 3-3 when Korda needed medical attention to his wrist and from there on it clearly looked like there was going to be only one winner.

The injury affected Korda’s rhythm and he lost six straight games from there on before calling it off.

Khachanov has been a top-10 player in the past having touched number eight in 2019 but over the following three years, his results have been modest compared to his Paris Masters title win in 2018. In fact that victory was the last time he won an ATP tournament.

It was at the US Open last year that Khachanov showed some of the form from his peak as he stormed into the semifinals with wins over Pablo Carreno Busta and Nick Kyrgios.

And now, as if to prove that was no fluke, Khachanov has made it to his second Grand Slam semis in a row, taking down the likes of Frances Tiafoe, Yoshihito Nishioka and Korda in the previous three rounds.

Life might not be as easy in the semifinal but whatever the result of that Khachanov would have risen to 13th in the world at the very least. That should give him a lot of confidence going into that encounter.

Tsitsipas Ends the Lehecka Fairy-Tale

It took Tsitsipas all of three sets to finish off a solid run from the unheralded Jiri Lehecka. And in doing so, the Greek number one not only recorded his ninth successive win of the season, he made it to his third consecutive semifinal at this tournament.

Tsitsipas was on court for two hours and 19 minutes for his 6-3, 7-6 (2), 6-4 victory and while Lehecka did put up some fight in the second set, he was never ahead.

The world number four faced eight break-points in the encounter but wasn’t broken even once, while he himself got the better of Lehecka’s serve twice.

Both players won a similar percentage of their first serves, 80% to 79%, but it was Tsitsipas’ pedigree on his second serve – and while returning his opponent’s second serve – that made the difference.

Tsitsipas had earlier needed a five-setter to win his fourth round match against Jannik Sinner, while having also won against Matteo Berrettini, Borna Coric, David Goffin and Grigor Dimitrov in the United Cup.

With that kind of form under his belt, won’t be too surprised to see him dominate another outing.

Tsitsipas v Khachanov Prediction and Tips

No surprises who the favourite here is with Tsitsipas starting out a 4/9 favourite and we will have to back him to go through. But Khachanov could make it tougher for the Greek number one and could win a set.
