Djokovic had missed the Australian Open and US Open last season because of his anti-vaccination stance and the visa rules of those two countries while he fell in the quarterfinals at the French Open. His only Grand Slam title win in 2022 came at Wimbledon.
This year, the manner in which Djokovic has started things off, he looks good to go the distance in at least three of the four Grand Slams. And by making the final at the Australian Open – where he will play Stefanos Tsitsipas on Sunday – Djokovic’s title-winning odds have already been shortened at at least two of the other three majors.
Djokovic, who enters the 2023 Australian Open final a whopping 1/5 (with bet365) to win the title, is now a favourite to clinch two of the three other majors of the year and a second-favourite at the French Open. Interestingly, it’s not Rafael Nadal who starts off at the top of the pile for Roland-Garros!
As things stand at the moment, Djokovic has shortened to 6/5 (at bet365) to lift his eighth Wimbledon title this year, way ahead of the second bookmakers’ favourite in Matteo Berrettini. Berrettini, who has made the final at Wimbledon once before, is currently 8/1 with bet365 to win that trophy in 2023.
The Serb is 6/4 to win the 2023 US Open later this year, ahead of Daniil Medvedev who starts off a 7/2 favourite. More details on USA’s stance on those travelling into the country without a vaccination certificate are awaited though.
It’s at the French Open that Djokovic isn’t quite the favourite – yet anyway – with Carlos Alcaraz having shown a glimpse of what he is capable of last season.
Alcaraz, who will lose his number one ranking to either Djokovic or Tsitsipas depending on who wins the title, but all eyes will be on him when he returns to the courts following his withdrawal from the Australian Open due to injury.
The US Open winner last year, had a brilliant clay court swing where he won 26 of the 30 matches he featured in. This included two titles – one at Barcelona and another at Monte-Carlo – but fell in the quarterfinal to Alexander Zverev at the French Open.
Still, he looked to have exhibited enough skill on clay for the bookmakers to have propped him up as a favourite at Roland-Garros at the moment.
He starts off marginally ahead of Djokovic at the moment, with bet365 offering 7/4 for his victory at the 2023 French Open and 15/8 for Djokovic to add to his already-burgeoning Grand Slam collection.
Will this be Djokovic’s year yet again where he goes at least one major ahead of Rafael Nadal?
