Garcia Returns after Early-ish Australian Open Exit

Garcia has had a decent start to the season but would have liked to have done a lot better than her fourth round exit at the Australian Open last week. She went down in straight sets to Magda Linette there.

The Frenchwoman, who jumped up to fourth in the rankings last season following four title wins in the year, had earlier won both her singles matches at the United Cup.

She followed it up with a hard-fought win over Katerina Siniakova at the Adelaide International 2 opener but then lost to Belinda Bencic in the very next round.

These two defeats, to Bencic and Linette, would probably rankle Garcia a little given they came against players who showed some pedigree. To overturn those self-doubts, if any, Garcia would hope to start things off here with a solid win and then try and go the distance.

Martincova Yet to Win a Main Draw Match in 2023

She had once risen up to 40th in the world but when the new rankings are released on Monday, Martincova would have fallen to 87th in the world. And that has been down to her poor form last season and an underwhelming start this year.

In the three tournaments that Martincova has played this year, she has won a couple of qualifiers but nothing other than that.

Martincova had lost to Julia Grabher in her first round match at the Auckland Open despite starting out a 2/5 favourite there. She then went down to Laura Siegemund, again after being 1/2 to win it.

And then Martincova was drawn to play the eventual Australian Open winner, Aryna Sabalenka in the first round of the year’s first Grand Slam. She won just five games there.

Coming up against Garcia, things can only get tougher for her.

Garcia v Martincova Prediction and Tip

Garcia should have no issues against the woefully under-par Martincova. Expect a straight-set win here for Garcia.
