Niemeier Off to a Tough Start

Jule Niemeier hasn’t got off to a good start in 2023. She has not just lost all four of her matches but is yet to win a set this year.

Representing Germany at the United Cup, Niemeier lost both her singles matches to the Czech Republic’s Marie Bouzkova and the United States’ Madison Keys. She then got knocked out by Karolina Pliskova in the first qualifying round in Adelaide-2.

She next made her main draw debut at the Australian Open, but made an early exit, falling to Iga Swiatek in the opening round.

The 23-year-old made quite an impression last year, during a 41-23 season. Her best was a run to the last eight on her Wimbledon debut. She also won her first WTA 125 title on clay in Makarska and won another clay court title at the ITF level. In all, she has won 4 ITF titles in her career from six finals and all of them have come on clay.

While she tends to do well on clay and also surprised all with her performance on grass at Wimbledon last year, she is yet to prove herself on hard courts as she has played very little on the surface. However, she showed glimpses of what she can do on hard courts at the U.S. Open, when she reached the fourth round on her debut last year.

She is yet to open her account this year. Can she do it on Monday?

Danilovic Comes Through Qualifiers

Olga Danilovic made it to the main draw with a three-set win over Britain’s Katie Swan in the second qualifying round on Sunday.

The Serbian dominated the first set, but saw the Briton make a strong comeback in the second. With match tied at one-set all, Danilovic got her act together in the final set and raced to victory, bagelling the World no. 137 and moving into the next round.

Ranked no. 141, Danilovic converted 6 of 13 break points and saved 2 of 5 to win the match 6-2, 3-6, 6-0.

She had earlier beaten Clara Tauson 6-4, 6-4 in the first qualifying round.

Danilovic, who has a WTA title to her name and has also been a runner-up once, is 4-2 this year. She will be playing her first tour-level main draw match of the season, with all her wins coming in qualifying rounds so far.

Jule Niemeier v Olga Danilović Prediction and Tip

Given how Niemeier’s gone over the last one year, she will be the favourite in this contest, despite the poor start. Danilovic also prefers playing on clay, so both are inexperienced on hard courts. But Niemeier had an impact at the U.S. Open last year and she will hope to build her reputation on hard courts this year. The German should win the match and advance to the next round.
