Martic Stretched by Mladenovic

She was playing her home tournament but Kristina Mladenovic’s singles has been so under-par that the Frenchwoman was 23/10 coming into her opener. Which is why it was a surprise to see Martic lose her way a few times in her match against Mladenovic.

In the end, the Croat came through 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 in two hours and 16 minutes but not before she was broken three times in the encounter. Martic’s serving did become better as the match went along though as she won 53%, 66% and 88% of her first serve points in the three sets respectively.

What also helped were nine aces from Martic’s racquet while Mladenovic served up 11 double-faults in the encounter, helping her opponent to break her four times in the match.

Martic had earlier lost two of her three singles matches at the United Cup to kick-start the season and then lost in the second round at the Australian Open to Shuai Zhang.

Can she make it two wins in as many matches for the first time since September last season?

Parks Needs Three against Grabher

Julia Grabher was a whopping 4/1 coming into her first round match against Parks but put up a sterling fighting display before her American opponent got the better of her.

Parks, ranked 79th in the world, carved out a 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 victory over Grabher, needing two hours and five minutes to make it through in the end.

After losing her serve in the third game of the opening set, Parks retaliated with two breaks of serves to pocket the opening set. In the second, however, both players held their serves very comfortable till the 12th game when Parks lost hers off the second break-point, giving Grabher the set.

The writing was on the wall though in the deciding set when Parks broke in the very first game and then again to go 5-2 up. While she failed to serve it out in the eighth game, Parks overcame a break-point in the 10th game to clinch the win.

Can Parks continue the same forward?

Martic v Parks Prediction and Tip

Parks had ended the previous season with successive WTA 125 titles and while she failed to qualify for the Australian Open, a win here in the opener holds her in a good stead. The experience of Martic makes this a keen tussle, one that could see either player come through in the end.
