Our 2023 Davis Cup Qualifying Predictions & Picks

Croatia looks to be the most balanced and possesses a fearsome group at this year’s Davis Cup qualifiers. With Marin Cilic and Borna Coric on the team, they should overwhelm an Austrian team, who despite recalling Dominic Thiem for the first time since 2019, might just lack the cutting edge away from home.

There is a lot of talent in the French team combining experience with youth. Expect them to have a lot of killer instinct in finishing off Hungary in Tatabanya.

USA have already won one team competition in 2023 and should put themselves in contention to win the Davis Cup later in the year. They will hand out debuts to the likes of Jenson Brooksby and Mackenzie McDonald, but should equally perform to take down Uzbekistan in Tashkent very comfortably.

A year ago Germany would have had the upper hand in this tie. But not anymore. With Alexander Zverev still short on match practice, Switzerland looks to have a wealth of talent and experience in their camp. And with a Davis Cup winner Stan Wawrinka in their team, they remain unchanged from last September when they beat Ecuador.

Colombia have a home tie and a choice of the playing surface. But Great Britain should be fine. Cameron Norrie should excel on clay and Dan Evans has the court craft to perform on any court. Look out for rising star Jack Draper who is filling Andy Murray’s shoes this weekend.

Serbia will be without their prominent superstar Novak Djokovic, but pretty much retained the same team that played in the Davis Cup Finals last year. I expect to defeat an understrength Norway team routinely despite playing away from home.

Chile are looking to reach the Davis Cup Finals group stage for the first time since 2019 and this could be an opportune moment for them. They play on home soil and on clay, against a Kazakh team that is so reliant on their talisman Alexander Bublik.

South Korea pulled the rabbit out of the hat last year, reaching the Group Stage Finals, and even clinched a singles win over eventual winners Canada (Kwon defeated Auger-Aliassime). But if David Goffin and Co. can clinch singles win on day one, it is tough to imagine the Belgians losing control.

Sweden will be looking to scale past Bosnia, with the Ymer brothers likely to be crucial in their progress. Bosnia have experience in their ranks but the Scandinavians have performed with distinction in this tournament.

The Netherlands have two players inside the Top 100. And Tim Van Rijthoven is also not far off from making it three. Last time they made it to the final eight, and they should be expected to replicate that result this year.

Argentina don’t have two of its top singles stars in their team and the rest of the continent have not played particularly well on indoor hard courts. Finland could pounce here.

The emergence of Jiri Lehecka continues the rising tide of Czech talent. I think they were extremely unfortunate at the United Cup, but I fancy them to make amends in Maia.
