Good Australian Summer for McDonald

Mackenzie McDonald traditionally played well in Australia and he’d like to extend that in a rare chance to play for the US Team in the Davis Cup. McDonald has a 4-3 record so far and he’s a really strong server which is why he was picked for this matchup.

Playing indoors isn’t his speciality but he’s pretty decent at it holding a 44-35 record overall. He’s also a player that doesn’t make too many mistakes which is perfectly suited for playing a player that is ranked below you. He can just patiently wait for a mistake against Fomin who never played against players on this level.

Playing in ‘hostile’ conditions won’t bother him that much as he’s also a rather cool player who doesn’t buckle easily under pressure. All of this is shaping up to be a really good matchup for him.

I do expect him to handle this matchup comfortably and secure that first point for his national team.

Fomin Hoping For an Upset

Beating McDonald would be a major coup for Fomin but the odds are not in his favour. A fairly young and solid player, the Uzbekistani isn’t the best indoor player. He has a 16-16 record on the surface and not that much experience, certainly less than McDonald.

He also didn’t play that well to start the year as he has an 0-2 record so far. Both of these matches were played on hard courts but both were losses in Australia. Like his compatriot Sultanov, Fomin has a decent game overall but the talent was never good enough for the biggest level.

He will try and battle hard in this one because he’s playing at home but there is very little he can do if McDonald comes with his strongest tennis.

I expect a valiant effort from him but just like Sultanov, he’ll probably be beaten in straight sets unless McDonald produced one of the worse efforts in recent memory.

McDonald v Fomin Prediction and Tip

As I wrote above this is a matchup largely dependent on how McDonald plays. If he plays well he’ll win. If he plays okay he’ll win. Even with bad tennis he might pull off the win so in essence take him to win.
