Benjamin Bonzi v Lorenzo Sonego Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came at the 2022 Indian Wells Masters which Bonzi won in straight sets to make the third round.

In-Form Bonzi Coming off Australian Open Third Round Appearance

Till before the start of this season, Bonzi had never made it past the second round at a Grand Slam competition and never entered the final of an ATP tournament.

This year, Bonzi has achieved both those marks, making it to round three at the Australian Open and finishing a runner-up at the Pune Open.

Bonzi, who was a shock winner over Emil Ruusuvuori and Botic van de Zandschulp on his way to making it to the final in Pune, then sent the 9/25 favourite Pablo Carreno-Busta packing from the second round at the Australian Open.

And while Bonzi lost in straight sets to Alex de Minaur, these aforementioned results would have given him a hope he can break into the top 40 on the ATP charts.

Having started out the season ranked 60th in the world, Bonzi has already inched up to 45th at the moment. A sterling couple of weeks could see him get past that barrier.

Sonego 1-3 in 2023

To be fair to Sonego, he has been unfortunate to have been drawn some of the most brutal early opponents this season. Which is his 1-3 win-loss record should be taken with a bit of a pinch of salt here.

At the Adelaide International where he played his first tournament of the season, Sonego faced Daniil Medvedev in his opener. In the following week at the same city, Sonego was pitted against the in-form and the eventual semifinalist Jack Draper.

And then, after he had defeated the 105th-ranked Nuno Borges in the opening round at Australian Open, Sonego fell to Hubert Hurkacz in the second.

Now Bonzi might not belong to the same pedigree of opponents Sonego has lost to this year but given the Frenchman’s form and his own preference for clay, the world number 51 could have a challenge on his hands.

Bonzi v Sonego Prediction and Tip

Sonego is 5/6 to win this to Bonzi’s 10/11 which seems to be tempting odds for the latter’s victory. A hard-fought encounter which sees at least a tie-breaker could be in the offing.
