Jannik Sinner v Arthur Fils Head to Head

Sinner and Fils have never faced each other in a competitive match before this.

Sinner Crushes Sonego

After getting a first round bye and receiving a walkover in the second after Marton Fucsovics failed to take to court, Sinner did not spend too much on his quarterfinal.

The Italian, returning to competitive tennis after getting knocked out of the Australian Open in the fourth round, sent Lorenzo Sonego packing in straight sets to make it to the semifinal.

Sinner won 6-4, 6-2 in an hour and 36 minutes to seal his berth in the last four stage, facing all three of his break-points in the first set. He was broken once too after Sonego responded to a break of his own serve with one in the fourth game.

That was the last time Sinner allowed his opponent any kind of control, as he broke right back and soon after that sealed the set. In the second, he went 2-0 up and consolidated the break with a second one in the fifth game.

With rustiness not a factor, Sinner should not have a lot of trouble continuing his march in this tournament.

Fils Makes Halys Pay

Playing a fellow Frenchman in the form of Quentin Halys, Fils wasn’t quite the favourite going into his quarterfinal. Not even his 9-1 win-loss record on the Challenger circuit this season and wins over far more superior opponents in the first two rounds allowed that luxury.

Fils proved the bookmakers wrong though as he cruised to a 7-6 (3), 6-3 win over Halys to make it to the semifinal of a top ATP event for the first time in his career.

In a match lasting an hour and 23 minutes, Fils did not lose his serve even once while getting the better of his opponent’s serve once from the six chances he got.

This follows victories against Richard Gasquet and Roberto Bautista Agut in the first two rounds for the 18-year-old Fils. Coming up against Sinner will be a greater challenge, sure, but he does look like he has the confidence and exuberance of a teenager.

Sinner v Fils Prediction and Tip

No surprises who the favourite is but at the same time, tread carefully on this. At 1/4, Sinner’s win odds don’t look very attractive, instead look for the games handicap.
