Petra Kvitova v Zhang Shuai Head to Head

Petra Kvitova leads Zhang Shuai 4-2 in their head-to-head. On outdoor hard courts, they at tied at 1-1. However, these two players have not clashed on the WTA Tour since 2020.

Kvitova Begins Quest for 3rd Doha Title

Petra Kvitova is one of the dark horses to win the Qatar Open this year. She has a phenomenal record at this tournament that none of the 28-woman field can match.

Kvitova is a two-time champion in Doha and was a finalist at the 2020 edition. In her previous eight visits, she has made the quarterfinals or better on six occasions.

The surface and playing conditions suit Kvitova’s game nicely. And as long as she can find her range this week, she remains a big threat to any of the top eight seeds.

The Czech lefty is 5-2 for the season. She began her 2023 campaign at the United Cup where she was unbeaten in her two singles rubbers. Kvitova exited her next tournament at the quarterfinals stage in Adelaide 2.

At the Australian Open, she suffered a shock second-round defeat at the hands of Anhelina Kalinina in straight sets. She hasn’t played since leaving Melbourne.

Zhang Chases First Doha Win in Six Years

Unlike Kvtiova who excels at the Qatar Open, Zhang Shuai has not particularly enjoyed her visits to Doha. In fact, since her last quarterfinal there in 2017, Zhang has lost the first round in each of three previous trips.

The 34-year-old opened up her 2023 campaign with two back-to-back defeats at the tuneup events in Australia. But at the Australian Open, Zhang rolled back the years and managed to reach the second week, but lost heavily to Karolina Pliskova in the fourth round.

That was the start of a poor run of results that saw Zhang’s title defense in Lyon come to a juddering halt, taking just two games off Maryna Zanevska in a surprise second-round exit.

Last week Zhang was beaten in the first round at the Abu Dhabi Open by Anett Kontaveit, falling short in three sets.

Kvitova v Zhang Prediction and Tip

Kvitova hasn’t played since Melbourne, but that shouldn’t really be a problem here. Zhang has fared poorly since leaving Melbourne and we expect the twot-time champion to make a comfortable start in familiar surroundings.
