Steve Johnson v Nuno Borges Head to Head

This will be their second meeting with the first having come just a day ago in the qualifiers. It was Borges who ran off to a 6-2, 6-2 win in that match to make it to the main draw while Johnson entered round one as a lucky loser.

Johnson Makes it as a Lucky Loser

After missing the entire first month of the tennis season, Johnson finally made his maiden appearance of 2023 at the Cleveland Challenger earlier in February.

He made the quarterfinal in that tournament before feeling confident enough to take part in the Dallas Open where he fell in the very first round. It was Adrian Mannarino who got the better of Johnson in that encounter.

And then having to make it through the qualifiers here in Delray Beach, it looked like Johnson’s journey was ended by Borges when the 104th-ranked player dropped just four games in his qualifying victory over the American.

As it turned out, Johnson has managed to make the main draw as a lucky loser following the withdrawal of fellow American Jenson Brooksby.

Can he avenge that defeat quickly, in turn also win his first main draw match of the season?

Borges’ Yet to Win a Main Draw Match in Three Months

The last time Borges won a main draw match was in Napoli in October 2022, defeating Albert Ramos-Vinolas in the opener there in two difficult sets.

Since then, Borges has played in just one tournament at the highest level – opting to feature on the Challenger circuit – and lost his opener there. It was a four-set defeat at the hands of Lorenzo Sonego at the Australian Open in January.

In his second tournament this season, Borges needed to feature in the qualifiers to make it through to the Delray Beach Open main draw and he did just that. In the first qualifying rounds, Borges dropped just three games to Jonas Forejtek before clinching the second qualifying round win against Johnson.

With his confidence that high, it might not be too much to expect Borges to make it two in two against Johnson.

Johnson v Borges Prediction and Tip

Johnson has had his day under the sun having reached a career-high ranking of 21st in the world at one point but Borges seems to be in the kind of rhythm that could see him clinch a place in round two.
