Yoshihito Nishioka v Mackenzie McDonald Head to Head

This is a long-standing rivalry which goes back to 2014 when they had first faced off in a Challenger tournament. Nishioka had won that match.

They did not face off again till 2019 but since then have played five more times at the highest level and Nishioka leads 4-1. Their last two meetings came earlier this year itself – at the Australian Open and Adelaide International – and it was Nishioka who won both times.

Nishioka Makes it 8-2 for the Season

A former finalist at this tournament, Nishioka overturned a stunning collapse in fortunes in the second set of his opening round match against Oscar Otte to win the match in three sets.

Nishioka clinched a 6-2, 0-6, 6-4 win over Otte in the first round, as he followed on from his semifinal appearance at the Adelaide International and fourth round place at the Australian Open to move to round two.

In a match that lasted nearly two hours, Nishioka struggled with his serve through sets two and three as he won only 45% of his total points in that time-frame against a player who is known for his serves.

Where Nishioka got things under control was despite being a break down on two separate occasions in the final set, he did not lose heart and proceeded to break back and level the proceedings. And when he got his chance, he got the better of Otte’s serve at 4-5 in the third.

Nishioka might not have played his best match in recent times and still found a way to win. That would be a huge confidence-booster for the Japanese number one.

McDonald Prevents All-Japanese Second Round Match

In what might have been a rare occurrence, we could have seen an all-Japanese second round encounter but for McDonald’s solidity on court. He took all of an hour and eight minutes to get past Taro Daniel in their opener and march into the round of 16.

McDonald won 6-2, 6-2 in a match which four breaks of serve, all of which went in the American’s favour.

While both had a similar percentage of first serves in, it was McDonald who took advantage of them by winning 84% of those points as compared to his opponent’s 50%. Even the second serve points went in favour of McDonald who won 60% of them as opposed to 50% for Daniel.

Having earlier made the second round at Dallas, where McDonald lost to Frances Tiafoe, this win takes the American to an excellent 7-4 record for the season. A tough cookie awaits him though.

Nishioka v McDonald Prediction and Tip

Nishioka is 8/13 to win this, which we think are just odds for the Japanese player to clinch this one. Expect a hard-fought encounter though that could see a third set.
