Daniil Medvedev v Botic van de Zandschulp Head to Head
Medvedev leads the rivalry 3-0. He won at the U.S. Open in 2021, the Australian Open in 2022 and also at the Cincinnati Open last year. Van de Zandschulp has won just one set against the Russian.

Medvedev Rallies Past Davidovich Fokina
Edged out in the first set, Daniil Medvedev found his rhythm in the second and he continued to dominate in the third to score a comeback win over Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the opening round of the Rotterdam Open.
The world no. 11 served 9 aces and saved 6 of 11 break points that he faced against the Spaniard. He too had plenty of breaking opportunities in the match, and he capitalised on half of the 16 that he held to register a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory.
Medvedev struck 26 winners and made just 13 unforced errors in the match, while Davidovich Fokina hit 27 winners and 39 unforced errors.
The win improved Medvedev to 6-2 in 2023. He was a semifinalist in Adelaide but could only reach as far as the third round at the Australian Open. This is his third tournament of the season and he will be relieved to have safely gone past the first round after falling in the opener in his last two appearances in the tournament in 2020 and 2021. Prior to that, he was a quarterfinalist in 2018 and a semifinalist in 2019.
Can he go that far this year? He will definitely be eyeing the last eight spot as he next faces a player he has dominated in the past. If all goes as predicted, he could be facing the third seed Felix Auger-Aliassime in the last eight stage and that would be a spicy affair.
The 15-time tour-level champion is also looking to break back into the top 10, after having fallen out of it for the first time since 2019.

Van de Zandschulp Bounces Back to Beat Halys
Like Medvedev, world no. 35 Botic Van de Zandschulp, too, came back from a set down to win his opening round contest on Wednesday.
The Dutchman was out-aced 6-14 and he also double faulted 10 times in the match, while his opponent double faulted just thrice. Both broke each other six times each, but while Halys saved 10 break points, Van de Zandschulp saved just 1. Yet the Dutchman had the last laugh as he won the key moments and was particularly dominant in the final set tiebreak which helped him seal the two hour and 24 minute contest 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4).
Van de Zandschulp is now 2-2 in Rotterdam and 4-2 in 2023. He began the season by reaching the semifinals in Pune and could reach only as far as the second round at the Australian Open.
The 27-year-old is coming off a pretty good 38-29 run at the top level last year and that included his first ATP final in Munich. He had also won his first ATP doubles title last season.
