Alex de Minaur took down world no. 5 and second seed Andrey Rublev in straight sets on Wednesday to reach the second round in Rotterdam for the third consecutive year.
The 23-year-old Aussie had lost in the Round of 16 on his tournament debut in 2021 but made it to the quarterfinals last year. This year he is one win away from a second quarterfinal and given the start that he got he will be the favourite to win the second round match against Cressy.
De Minaur, who won 88% points on his first delivery against the Russian in the first round, did not face a single break point in the match, but he held six of them, breaking Rublev once in each set.
A six-time tour-level champion from 10 finals, De Minaur improved to 5-2 in 2023. He had beaten Rafael Nadal at the United Cup, where he won one and lost one. At the Australian Open, he reached the fourth round for the second consecutive year, but was prevented from reaching the quarters by Novak Djokovic.
De Minaur has now beaten five top 10 players over the last one year. Can eh keep the momentum going in the Round of 16?

Cressy Holds Off Van Rijthoven
He missed out on the title in Montpellier last week, but Maxime Cressy made a winning start in Rotterdam, holding off local hope Tim Van Rijthoven in a three-set opening round contest.
Cressy struck 21 aces and 40 winners to the Dutchman’s 13 aces and 27 winners to win the topsy turvy contest 6-3, 6-7 (2-7), 6-3. The American was not broken in the match but he converted 2 of 3 break points to send the world no. 110. packing.
Cressy is now 6-3 in 2023. The 2022 Hall of Fame Open champion reached his fourth career final last week, but couldn’t claim a second ATP title, as he went down to Jannik Sinner in the final.
The world no. 40 had beaten seeded players in Emil Ruusuvuori, Borna Coric and Holger Rune en route the final but couldn’t match up to the Italian, who won in straight sets.
The 25-year-old American had a breakthrough season last year, which saw him peak to a career high of 31 in August. He had however slipped down the rankings since then and was ranked n0. 51 last week, but a solid show in Montpellier helped him gain 11 places. Can he continue the move up with another deep run this week?
De Minaur v Cressy Prediction and Tip
Both players have done well over the past one year, but De Minaur holds slight edge. He has produced results consistently against the top players and knocked out the second seed in the first round. Expect the Aussie to edge past the big-serving American in the second round.
