Jessica Pegula v Beatriz Haddad Maia Head to Head

Pegula Saves Two MPs Before Advancing

World no. 4 Jessica Pegula saved two match points as she foiled Jelena Ostapenko’s bid to score a comeback win in the second round on Wednesday. The victory helped the American reach the quarterfinals in Doha for the second time in her career.

The last time she had made it to the last eight, it was in 2021, when she went on to reach the semifinals before bidding the tournament goodbye.

Seeded no. 2, she had an opening round bye this year and therefore, she began her campaign in the round of 16. Pegula was off to a flying start, racing to a 4-0 lead before the world no. 14 finally got on board. But Ostapenko couldn’t break Pegula in the first set, which finished in under 30 minutes.

The Latvian however bounced back in the second set, breaking the American twice and forcing the decider. With the momentum shifted, Ostapenko got an early break in the final set and she led 3-0 and then 5-2. It was at this point when Pegula raised her level. She won a tough service game and then denied Ostapenko a chance to close the match by breaking the Latvian.

Ostapenko then held two match points on Pegula’s serve in the next game but the American was equal to her task and she finished the match by winning the last five games in a row.

Pegula saved 8 of 11 break points and converted 4 of 6 during the match.

With the win, she improved to 9-2 in 2023. The 28-year-old had finished with a 4-1 record in the United States’s triumphant run at the United Cup, which included a straight sets win over world no. 1 Iga Swiatek.

She then reached the quarterfinalist of the Australian Open for the third successive year, but couldn’t reach her first major semifinal. This is her third tournament this year and she will take a lot of positives from her dramatic Round of 16 win into the quarterfinal.

Haddad Maia Tops Kasatkina

Following her run to the semifinals in Abu Dhabi last week, Beatriz Haddad Maia has made it to the quarterfinals in Qatar.

The Brazilian, who peaked to a career-high ranking of no. 12 this week, is enjoying a very good season. Barring the Australian Open, where she made a first round exit, she has delivered decent results in the other tournaments, as a result of which she is 9-3 in 2023.  She won both her matches at the United Cup, featured in the quarterfinals in Adelaide-2 and the final four in Abu Dhabi last week.

At the Qatar Open, Haddad Maia defeated Paula Badosa 7-6 (8-6), 6-3 in the first round and then followed it up with a 6-3, 7-6 (9-7) win over Daria Kasatkina in the Round of 16 on Wednesday.

The lefty, who won two WTA titles from three finals last year, failed to save any of the three break points that she faced against the Russian, but she capitalised on five of the six breaking opportunities that fell to her.

Can the Brazilian keep the winning run going in Doha? She is definitely expected to give the second seed a run for her money.

Pegula v Haddad Maia Prediction and Tip

Both come into the quarterfinal in great form and it promises to go down the wire. Pegula has been the more consistent of the two over the last one year and she will hold the edge on Thursday.
