Tallon Griekspoor v Gijs Brouwer Head to Head

No previous matches have been played between Griekspoor and Brouwer.

Grieskpoor Spells the End of Zverev

Alexander Zverev is slowly getting back into the groove of competitive tennis at the highest level and there will be times where he might not be at his best. His second round match here against Griekspoor was one of those occasions where Zverev blew away a one set lead to lose in three.

In a match that lasted nearly two hours, Griekspoor came back from a set down to win 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 and seal his place in the quarterfinals.

Griekspoor was broken once in the first set but from that point onward faced just three break-points in the remaining time and saved all of them. A break of serve in each of the second and third set was all that the Dutchman needed to get past Zverev even as the German failed to match up to his opponent’s serving standards.

This was Griekspoor’s ninth win for the year, to go with just one defeat which came at the hands of Stefanos Tsitsipas at the Australian Open.

He had been a straight-set winner over Mikael Ymer in the first round and another victory here could take him close to his career-best ranking of 44th in the world.

Brouwer Benefits from Rune Injury

A right wrist injury for Holger Rune made it difficult for him to get going in his second round match against Brouwer and the world number nine faded away in a 4-6, 0-4 defeat. The Danish number one retired from the match in the second set.

This is not to say that Brouwer did nothing of note, far from it.

Brouwer, who had a wildcard for the event following the withdrawal of Gael Monfils, fell behind in the first set after losing his serve in the fifth game. Rune took a 4-2 lead soon and looked good to go 5-2 up when he got a break-point in the very next game but failed to convert it.

That was the last time he would come close to winning a game in the set as Brouwer broke back twice to clinch the set and then two more times in the second set to take a 4-0 lead. At this point, Rune threw in the towel, unable to continue because of his wrist injury.

That sets up very nicely for the local crowds who will relish the prospects of an all-Dutch quarterfinal.

Griekspoor v Brouwer Prediction and Tip

Brouwer got lucky in the previous round but he will now be up against a player in Griekspoor who has won nine of his previous 10 matches. Expect Griekspoor to come through in straight sets here.
