Kaia Kanepi v Viktoriya Tomova Head to Head
Kanepi won their only meeting in straight sets in 2014.

Kanepi Off to a Slow Start
After an excellent 2022 season, Kaia Kanepi is off to a slow start in 2023.
The 37-year-old Estonian brings a 3-4 season record to Dubai. Kanepi won her season opener in Adelaide by beating Aliaksandra Sasnovich but lost in the second round to Marketa Vondrousoa.
She then reached the main draw in Adelaide-2 as a lucky loser, and went on to win the opening round but fell in the second round to Paula Badosa.
At the Australian Open, Kanepi had reached her maiden quarterfinal in her 13th appearance in 2022, but this year she was knocked out in the first round by Kimberly Birrell. Kanepi had won the first set but the Aussie came back to win the next two sets. That was Kanepi’s last action of the season so far.
She will be playing in Dubai for the sixth time this year. Her best was a run to the semis in 2009. Since then she has won just one match in Dubai and that win came in 2011. The last three appearances have all seen her lose in the first round. Can the Estonian go past the opening round in 2023?

Tomova Looking for First Main Draw Win of the Season
World no. 100 Victoriya Tomova comes to Dubai with a 7-5 record this year. But all those seven wins have come in the qualifying rounds.
Tomova has played four tour-level matches in 2023 and lost all four. Now having qualified for the Dubai Open, she will be hoping to get her first main draw win on Sunday. She has an outside chance as well as the Estonian is struggling for form.
Tomova has a 7-1 record in qualifiers this year, and her most recent wins came in the qualifying rounds in Dubai this week.
Tomova had to rally past India’s Ankita Raina in the first qualifying round, but she needed just two sets to dispatch South Korea’s Jang Su-jeong in the second qualifying round on Saturday.
The 27-year-old failed to save any of the three break points she faced against Jang, but converted 5 of 6 to beat the world no. 146 and reach the main draw.
This is the third consecutive tournament when she has qualified for the main draw. She lost the opener in Linz to Marketa Vondrousova and the opener in Doha to Belinda Bencic. Can she win the opener in Dubai?
Kanepi v Tomova Prediction and Tip
Although Tomova’s recent wins have all come in qualifiers, she has a 7-3 record since the Australian Open, while Kanepi will be playing for the first time since her Australian Open exit. So the Bulgarian will test the Estonian, however Kanepi’s experience should help her edge through.
