Andy Murray v Lorenzo Sonego Head to Head

Murray and Sonego have never played each other in a competitive match before this.

Murray Returns after Australian Open Exit

This will be Murray’s first match since bowing out of the Australian Open in its third round, having last taken to court about a month back. Rustiness could be a factor coming into this one for the Brit.

What makes this surprising is Murray has played in just two tournaments all season so far; one at the Adelaide International to kick-start the year and then at the Australian Open.

At the former, Murray lost in the very first round to Sebastian Korda – who would go on to make the final there – and he followed that up with two wins at the first major. In the first round in Melbourne, Murray shocked Matteo Berrettini in a battling five-setter before repeating the dose in the second round against Thanasi Kokkinakis.

It was Roberto Bautista-Agut who took Murray down in the third round but again, the thing to note was the Brit put up a fight.

And it’s for that very reason one can expect Murray to come up with a solid showing as he resumes his tennis after nearly a month.

Sonego 3-5 for the Season

It’s not been a memorable season just yet for Sonego. The Italian has won just three of the eight matches he’s played spread across five tournaments and his best showing was just a quarterfinal appearance at the Montpellier Open earlier in February.

Since that, however, Sonego has lost successive matches yet again – bowing out in Montpellier and then losing his opener at the Rotterdam Open. To be fair to him, the losses came against Jannik Sinner and Felix Auger-Aliassime, two top-20 players and stars of the highest pedigree.

As far as Sonego’s record on hard court surface is concerned, it’s something he would want to improve upon – he has won just 42 and lost 54 of the matches he’s played there.

Against Murray who holds a solid record on these surfaces, the out-of-form Sonego will start a 6/5 underdog.

Murray v Sonego Prediction and Tip

Murray might not have played for a month but he should still have enough firepower to come out on top.
