Dominic Thiem v Thiago Monteiro Head to Head

Thiem and Monteiro have never faced off in a competitive match before this.

Thiem Sent Out in the Argentina Open Second Round

Having not won a single main draw match all season, Thiem set his focus on clay as he flew down to South American for the Golden Swing last week. And he seemed to have begun well at the Argentina Open when the Austrian registered a straight-set win over Alex Molcan in the first round of the tournament there.

Unfortunately for Thiem, that is all the fuel he had in his tank as he fell to a straight-set defeat in the second round to Juan Pablo Varillas.

Thiem now enters the Rio Open, a competition he had last played in 2020 and was a quarterfinalist here. He has also won a title here once before – it came in 2017 – with a semifinal and two other quarterfinal appearances to go with that.

The problem for Thiem is all of the aforementioned results are so much in the past that it doesn’t seem very relevant. The current version of Thiem, as we know, is struggling to get going and that could well be his immediate concern yet again.

Monteiro 0-2 on Clay in 2023

Monteiro loves his time on clay and that can be seen from his record on different surfaces. On surfaces outside of clay, Monteiro has won just 25 matches and lost 43.

On clay, this record improves to 42-48, which does not account for the 10 of the 13 titles he has won on clay at the lower levels of competition.

This year, however, Monteiro has been in a tussle to get something under his belt. Some win on whatever surface. He did pocket a Davis Cup match and made it through the qualifiers of the Auckland Open but other than that there have been no main draw victories.

If one thought his move to play in the clay court competitions in South America will lead to some positive results, they were sadly mistaken. At both, the Cordoba Open and the Buenos Aires Open, Monteiro was sent packing in the very first round.

And now he takes on a former French Open finalist in his opener. Can he turn things around?

Thiem v Monteiro Prediction and Tip

Thiem’s win in the opener last week gives him an edge over a player who has won nothing on clay this season from the two tournaments he’s played. Could see a three-setter though.
