Benjamin Bonzi v Luca van Assche Head to Head

There has been just one previous meeting between these two players and that came on the Challenger circuit in 2021, with Bonzi winning it in three sets.

Bonzi Stumbles after Good Start to 2023

Having made it to the final of the Pune Open at the start of the season, Bonzi would have been feeling quite chuffed about his prospects in the times to come. While he did bow out of the Adelaide International in the first round, Bonzi did carry his Pune form into the Australian Open.

At the season’s first Grand Slam, Bonzi won the first couple of rounds including a shock win over Roberto Bautista Agut in round two. And while he fell in the third to Alex de Minaur, Bonzi looked to be on the right track.

Since that second round win, however, things have flipped badly for Bonzi.

After going down to de Minaur, Bonzi also lost his singles Davis Cup match to Zsombor Piros and then saw Lorenzo Sonego and Jannik Sinner get the better of him in Montpellier and Rotterdam.

That gives him a four-match losing streak, something he would like to quickly turn around here.

Teenager van Assche Still Finding His Feet

Van Assche is just 18 years of age and had closed in on his career-best ranking of 137th earlier this season. Unfortunately for him, his form has deteriorated since and Van Assche has fallen out of the top 150 at the moment.

This has been down to his poor performances on the Challenger circuit as well.

A winner of two Challenger and Future titles last year, Van Assche began the season on the back of three successive defeats – including one in the first round of the Australian Open. While he finally notched up a victory at the Quimper Challenger, his overall record on the Challenger circuit this season is 3-3.

Which is why coming up against Bonzi, he might not have the confidence to take down his more experienced and better-ranked countryman in this opener.

Bonzi v van Assche Prediction and Tip

Bonzi will be our pick to win this despite his recent form concerns. Might get taken to a third set or have a longish one or two sets in a straight-set win though.
