Shelby Rogers v Ana Bogdan Head to Head

Claire Liu was a last minute addition to the main draw as a lucky loser and given the quality of some of the players in this competition she would have probably preferred to take on someone like Rogers. Except that Rogers was up to the task and in the end came away a straight-set winner in their opener.
Rogers won 6-4, 6-4 against Ekaterina Alexandrova’s replacement in the draw, with the match lasting an hour and 35 minutes.
Sure, it wasn’t very straightforward for Rogers who was broken once apiece in both the sets but on both occasions that came after she had already drawn first blood in the set.
In the first, Liu levelled things up in the fourth game but then lost her serve again in the ninth to capitulate in the set. The second set was even more one-sided after Rogers was only broken while serving for a 5-1 lead.
Rogers now has another good chance of getting past an opponent in a tournament that is filled with the kind of quality that the Dubai Open does.

Bogdan Sends Siegemund Out
Bogdan hadn’t done too much of note all season before this tournament. In the first two tournaments of the year she played in Adelaide, she had failed to qualify for the main draw.
And when she got a direct entry into the Australian Open and the Lyon Open in the two that followed, Bogdan had won just one set in total. Back in Doha last week, for the third time this season Bogdan couldn’t get past the qualifying stage, this time losing to Karolina Pliskova.
Which is why when Bogdan sent Laura Siegemund out in the first round here after having qualified for this event on the back of victories over Clara Burel and Tereza Martincova, she would have both, relieved and pleased.
Of course, much like Rogers she would be glad she isn’t playing a high-pedigreed opponent or even a seeded one but can she still conjure up something special to overturn the odds on offer?

Bogdan is 9/5 to win this and while she has the momentum from having won three in a row, Rogers should have enough firepower in her artillery to get past her opponent here. Might need three sets though.
