Maria Sakkari v Karolina Pliskova Head to Head
Four matches played and both have won two apiece. On clay it’s 1-1, and on hardcourt surfaces as well, it’s 1-1. The last of these meetings came at Toronto in 2022 where Pliskova had needed three sets to get past Sakkari.

For the second week in the running last week, Sakkari made it to the semifinal of a WTA event but for the second successive time she was sent packing from there at that stage.
Last week, in fact, Sakkari’s run was an excellent one with wins over some of the trickiest opponents around. In the first round she defeated the much-vaunted Qinwen Zheng before sending Ekaterina Alexandrova out in the second.
Her biggest win came in the quarterfinal where she overcame Caroline Garcia in a gruelling three-setter that had a couple of tie-breakers including one in the final set. It was also a match that took a lot out of her so that when she took on Jessica Pegula in the semifinal she did not have a lot left in her tank.
Fortunately she had had a first round bye here. Can she use that to her advantage here?

Pliskova Mauls Marketa
In a battle between the two Czech players, it was Pliskova who had gone into the match as a second-favourite with bookmakers offering 4/5 for a Marketa Vondrousova win. And it wasn’t without reason too given the kind of form that Pliskova has been in.
As it turned out, Pliskova routed Vondrousova 6-3, 6-4 to march into the second round here.
Speaking of the aforementioned form issues, Pliskova did have a brilliant run at the Australian Open where she made it all the way to the quarterfinal. Other than that, however, the former world number one had won just one main draw match from the five she played.
Which is also why it’s difficult to see Pliskova repeat what she did in the first round against Vondrousova here against a player who has been solid all throughout the season.
Sakkari v Pliskova Prediction and Tip
Sakkari is a 4/6 favourite here and should come through. Will she need three sets? Well that depends a lot on how well Pliskova is serving but we could see at least one of the sets go the distance.
