Carlos Alcaraz v Mateus Alves Head to Head

Alcaraz and Alves are facing off for the first time in their career.

Alcaraz Begins Title Defence

In what was his first tournament last week since returning from injury, Alcaraz looked like he was never away.

Sure he started off slightly shakily in his second round encounter at the Argentina Open against Laslo Djere when he dropped a set and looked like he had some issues with his neck but from that point on there was no looking back.

Alcaraz defeated Dusan Lajovic in the quarterfinal and routed Bernabe Zapata Miralles in the semifinal to set up a meeting with Cameron Norrie in the title-decider. Norrie was expected to be his first real challenge in the entire tournament and while the Brit did show some late spark, it was the world number two who came through in two sets.

It was a stark reminder of how strong Alcaraz was when he won all those titles last year – five of them in total including three on clay – and how he has not lost any of that mojo.

He should have no issues in his opener here.

Alves Yet to Play a Main Draw Match in 2023

His career-best ranking of 395th in the world was achieved last year but Alves has now fallen to outside the top 550. And this year itself he has lost about 90 places after struggling in the only two tournaments he has managed to feature in.

That’s correct, Alves has played in just two Challenger competitions this season and he failed to qualify for the main draw at either.

Alves did try to qualify for his home event here in 2019 and 2020 but had stumbled in the qualifiers at both. This year, however, he has been awarded a wildcard to the main draw making it his first ever appearance at this level.

Unfortunately for Alves, as luck would have it, he has been drawn to play the world number two in his opener and that means this could be his only main draw match he plays in a long time. He would love to go out there and express himself and not worry too much about the result.

Alcaraz v Alves Prediction and Tip

Alcaraz is 1/100 to win this, so it’s best to talk about some of the other markets here. The games handicap and the total games, over and under are worth looking at because we could be in for a 6-2, 6-2 scoreline at best.
