Arthur Fils v Roman Safiullin Head to Head
Fils leads Safiullin 1-0 in their head-to-head, winning their first-round match at the Lille Challenger in 2022 in straight sets.

Fils Keen to Impress Again
Arthur Fils’ last wild card appearance was not too shabby. The 18-year-old stormed through the Montpellier draw stunning three-time champion Richard Gasquet, a man twice his age, en route to his maiden ATP semifinal.
Fils is 12-2 this season having bagged his first ATP Challenger title in Oeiras, Portugal, and finishing runner-up in Quimper to Gregoire Barrerer. And in Montpellier, it took eventual champion Jannik Sinner to halt his electric run.
Clearly, the young Frenchman has enormous momentum on his side and his tennis has won a lot of admirers. Fils will be keen to impress again on home soil as he plays on indoor hard courts for the fourth tournament in a row.
Fils started the year just outside the top 250, but has made a jaw-dropping rise in the space of one and a half months of competition. He sits at 118th spot in the rankings ahead of his Marseille Open main draw debut.

Safiullin Also Joined the Winners’ Circle
Roman Safiullin was also among the early winners of an ATP Challenger title in 2023, doing so at the Koblenz Challenger on indoor hard courts at the start of February.
The Russian has done well to nail a top 100 spot in the rankings in the past year after winning at Nur Sultan and Chicago on the ATP’s second tier.
And his hard work was handsomely rewarded in early February when he navigated past four three-setters to make the final in Koblenz, Germany, before taking out Vasek Pospisil in straight sets in the final.
Last week, Saifullin failed to scale the qualifying rounds in Rotterdam, losing to Mikael Ymer in three sets in the final round of qualifying.
This will be Saifullin’s first main draw on the ATP Tour since Adelaide when he lost in the second round to Denis Shapovalov in straight sets.
Fils v Safiullin Prediction and Tip
Fils’ breakthrough run in Montpellier breathes life into French men’s tennis with most of the old guard now at the twilight of their careers. With high expectations now on his shoulders, it will be fascinating to see how he responds, but he is likely to get the better of Safiullin for the second time.
