Cori Gauff v Elena Rybakina Head to Head
Their only previous meeting came in the 2022 WTA Toronto where Gauff had won a gruelling three-setter in a final set tie-breaker.

Coming off an early exit at the Doha Open last week, Gauff did not face too many issues against Aliaksandra Sasnovich in her second round match here.
After a first round bye, Gauff raced off to a 6-0, 6-4 win in a match lasting an hour and 11 minutes. As the scoreline suggests, the first set was a bit of a cakewalk for the American but she did have to pull out her A-game in the second to come through.
Gauff went 6-0, 2-0 up in the match before Sasnovich broke her serve and then dropped it again to give the American a 4-1 lead. This was followed by Gauff losing her serve in the seventh game and for a moment it looked like Sasnovich was back in it when she levelled things out at four games apiece.
But Gauff held on and then broke Sasnovich as she served to stay in the encounter.
The quality of opposition will rise drastically come the third round though.

Rybakina Continues Solid Run
Much like Gauff, Rybakina had also entered this tournament on the back of an early loss in the last tournament she played – in Abu Dhabi – but has shown what she is capable of with successive straight set wins here.
Rybakina, who had demolished Bianca Andreescu in the first round, overcame Marie Bouzkova 7-5, 6-2 in the second to march forward.
In a match lasting an hour and 44 minutes, Rybakina slammed six aces and overcame her only break of serve in the eighth game of the first set to subdue her Czech opponent.
Once she had won the tense first set, there was no looking back for Rybakina who did not face a single break-point in the second and broke Bouzkova twice in the process.
The Australian Open runner-up now has a challenging encounter next but goes in with the confidence of knowing she can deal with the world number six.

Rather interestingly it’s Rybakina who is a bookmakers’ favourite here given the difference in their ranking and the manner in which Gauff had kick-started the season. Backing Rybakina too.
