Iga Swiatek v Liudmilla Samsonova Head to Head
Their only previous outing came at the 2022 Stuttgart Open and Swiatek had won that in three sets.

As we had mentioned in our preview to Swiatek’s previous match too, she has been in irrepressible form. Form that saw her win a title at the Qatar Open last week for a total loss of a mere five games.
And much like that, she has started things off here in Dubai in her own murderous ways, taking down the former US Open runner-up Leylah Fernandez 6-1, 6-1.
Again, there was much of the same from Swiatek who did not allow Fernandez to settle down at all in the one hour, 13 minutes long encounter. The world number one broke twice in as many games in the first set to go 4-0 up before, strangely, dropping her own serve for the one and only time in the match.
She recovered quickly from there and won eight of the next nine games to clinch her place in the round three.
All of this while getting just 65% of her first serves in. Things could get more difficult for her opponent here if she could improve that a tad too.

Samsonova Benefits from Qinwen Withdrawal
After having scraped through a challenging first round opponent, Samsonova faced another tricky one in the second round in the form of Qinwen Zheng. Fortunately for her, there was no taking of the court from Zheng who opted to withdraw from the competition because of abdominal pain.
Samsonova will be relieved because her opening round encounter had seen her require two tie-breakers in a three-set win over Paula Badosa. The match had lasted a whopping three hours and 24 minutes.
Having reached the final of the Abu Dhabi Open earlier this month, Samsonova had gone down to Belinda Bencic in that match and followed that up with a first round loss at the Doha Open.
Still she entered this tournament having jumped up to a career-best ranking of 13th in the world. The question is if she can provide some sort of a challenge for Swiatek or will it be a case of the same old.
