Cressy Survives Opening Round Scare

Maxime Cressy survived a first round scare as the American edged past French wild card Geoffrey Blancaneaux in a three-set contest.

Cressy struck 22 aces in the match but also double faulted 13 times, while Blancaneaux had nine aces and just two double faults during the two-hour-and-50 minute tussle.

Cressy had broken Blancaneaux’s first service game and he maintained the advantage till the end of the first set. In the second set, Cressy went up a break in the seventh game, but the local hope responded immediately. The set was eventually decided in the tiebreak which saw Blancaneaux edge through.

The final set did not witness a single break of serve. There was just one breaking chance in the entire set, which fell to Cressy but Blancaneaux was equal to his task.

The world no. 37 improved his season record to 7-4. Cressy’s best this year came in Montpellier, where he reached his fourth career final, but couldn’t add to the only title he had won in Newport last year.

Bonzi Ousts Van Assche

Last year’s semifinalist Benjamin Bonzi ended a four-match losing streak on Monday as he defeated fellow Frenchman Luca Van Assche in the first round.

Bonzi served 11 aces, won 82% first serve points, saved half of the four break points that he faced and converted 4 of 10 that he held to beat the 18-year-old wild card 7-5, 7-5.

With the win, Bonzi has now improved his season record to 7-6. He had a promising start to 2023 when he reached his maiden ATP final in Pune. However he couldn’t win the title, going down to Tallon Griekspoor in three. The 26-year-old followed that run with his best ever Grand Slam showing at the Australian open. He made a third round debut in the tournament but was halted from progressing further by Alex de Minaur.

Ever since that defeat, Bonzi lost a Davis Cup singles match and suffered first round defeats in Montpellier and Rotterdam. As a result of those defeats he fell from the career-high ranking of no. 46 achieved earlier this month to the current ranking of no 60.

He will be relived to have returned to winning ways in Marseille and will be hoping to climb back the rankings.

Cressy v Bonzi Prediction and Tip

Cressy is the superior player in this contest. He has also been the more consistent of the two. Expect him to advance to another quarterfinal.
