Berrettini Returns after Five Weeks of Absence

It’s been a rather longish break for Berrettini, who has been away from tennis since getting knocked out early of the Australian Open in January. In turn, he was also panned by former Grand Slam winner Nicola Pietrangeli, who called him out for being too involved with sponsorship rather than focussing on his tennis.

While Berrettini hasn’t said too much in response, it was Nick Kyrgios who defended the Italian player for taking that call to prioritise money – if that indeed is the case.

Berrettini will, however, need his tennis to do the talking.

He has had an ordinary start to the season, having won and lost three matches apiece. It started with three successive victories at the United Cup where he got the better of Casper Ruud and Hubert Hurkacz but followed it up with defeats to Stefanos Tsitsipas and Taylor Fritz.

What would have hurt the most was his opening round loss at the Australian Open where he went down in a fighting five-setter to Andy Murray.

Molcan Coming in from the Clay-Court Swing

Molcan would be the first to admit it’s been an ordinary start to his season this year.

He has played eight matches spread across six tournaments but won just two of them – one at the Australian Open where he stunned Stan Wawrinka and the other at Rio last week.

Other than those two wins, Molcan’s defeats have come at the hands of players across a wide spectrum of rankings. He’s gone down to players outside the top 100 like Quentin Halys and Tim van Rijthoven and to a top-10 player like Felix Auger-Aliassime. Not to mention the 57th-ranked Laslo Djere.

Which is why coming up against Berrettini, Molcan will need a bit of a mini-miracle to get through and win his third match of the season. Tough job.

Berrettini v Molcan Prediction and Tip

Berrettini might have been away for a while but that shouldn’t cause too much kerfuffle for him. Expecting him to come through in straight sets.
