Frances Tiafoe v Yoshihito Nishioka Head to Head

These two have faced off twice at the highest level with Tiafoe winning both times. One of them was on the clay courts of Estoril in 2019 while the other came at the 2021 Rogers Cup.

Tiafoe Hoping to Recapture United Cup Form

At the United Cup earlier this year, Tiafoe was the only men’s player to end the tournament with five wins in a row. Not even Taylor Fritz, who was Tiafoe’s teammate in US’s successful campaign in that tournament won all his five matches.

Unfortunately for Tiafoe, things haven’t been as rosy on court for him since that run.

In the five matches that have followed, spread across the Australian Open and the Dallas Open, Tiafoe has won three and lost two. His Australian Open loss came at the hands of Karen Khachanov while JJ Wolf got the better of him in Dallas.

He now returns to court as he looks to prepare for the Indian Wells Open next week and a strong run will go a long way in helping find his feet again. Except that he is facing an opponent who has proved to be a challenge for a few players this season.

Nishioka Climbing the Rankings Ladder

Around 12 months ago, Nishioka’s form looked to have deserted him and he had fallen to 123rd in the world. Fast forward a year, he is currently ranked 32nd on the ATP charts and he could well be on the verge of starting out as a seeded player in a Grand Slam if it continues in this direction.

A late tournament win last year in Seoul kick-started that process and this year at the Australian Open the Japanese number one made it his best showing at a Grand Slam ever. Nishioka entered the fourth round before going down to Karen Khachanov.

Earlier in the season he had also made it all the way through to the semifinal of the Adelaide International.

More recently, however, Nishioka did falter at the Delray Beach. He went down in three sets to Mackenzie McDonald in the second round – a shock loss given he had come into the match as a favourite.

Against Tiafoe things would be a lot tougher but the fighting Nishioka will not make it any easy for the American player.

Tiafoe v Nishioka Prediction and Tip

We will have to go with Tiafoe despite Nishioka’s solid form, with the American needing three sets in all probability.
