Dominic Thiem v Cristian Garin Head to Head

There has been one previous meeting between these two players and Thiem had won that at the 2020 Vienna Open.

Thiem Struggles Continue on Clay

When Thiem decided to feature in the Golden Swing competitions in South America in the lead-up to the Indian Wells, the thinking behind that decision might have been to allow him to earn some ranking points by winning matches on the slower, clay courts.

Thiem hasn’t been himself since returning from his injury issues and these three tournaments – at Buenos Aires, Rio and now in Santiago – might have helped the Austrian get back to some rhythm.

It’s not worked out like that so far for Thiem.

At the Argentina Open he did win his opener against Alex Molcan but fell in the second round at the hands of Juan Pablo Varillas. And then featuring at the Rio Open last week, Thiem lost to Thiago Monteiro despite starting out a 9/20 favourite in the encounter.

A third set tie-breaker is what went against him.

Thiem will now start things off here against a player who has himself fallen from the highs of world number 17 to his current 98th rank but will know he could still be challenged by Cristian Garin.

Garin’s Lack of Form Remains a Concern

It was as recently as January 2022 that Garin was ranked 17th in the world. Fast forward by another 12 months and he has fallen to 98th with a season low of 103rd recently.

And much like Thiem, Garin also likes playing clay and has already featured in two tournaments in South American this season. Not too differently, Garin has won just one of the three matches he’s played – a first round victory at the Cordoba Open which was followed by successive defeats.

Garin lost to Joao Sousa in Cordoba despite being a 1/4 favourite there before Pedro Martinez sent him packing in Rio last week. Again, he had started off that match as a favourite.

Can Garin now shrug all those results off and try and take down a player who would have found the adjustment from being a top-5 player to trying to struggle past the opening rounds of competitions a huge turnaround?

Thiem v Garin Prediction and Tip

Thiem might hold a slight edge but only a little bit given all that’s gone around with him. On clay, with Thiem’s form the way it is, this could go down to the wire.
